General Discussion / Re: Where to buy Helmet and Gloves?

This topic gets beaten to death mostly because guys like me chime in with maybe incorrect information, confusing everyone in the process.

Nailed it.

Well, at least you were right about GW Cycle World!  I've bought all my bike gear from them and find them to be an excellent shop to deal with for buying parts and equipment.

I would have expected 2005 M helmets to expire at the end of this year but the wording in the ASN regulations have me hopeful they will be allowed until 2018.  I guess this is one of those things where I'll just have to check in the spring.

M2005 helmets are perfectly legal.

Canadian rule:

Quote
4.5.2 Acceptable helmets:
 FIA 8860-2004
 FIA 8860-2010
 FIA 8859-2015
 Snell 2015 SA, or 2015 M
 Snell 2010 SA, 2010 SAH, or 2010 M
 Snell 2005 SA, or 2005 M (expiry 31.12.2018)
 SFI Foundation 31.1/2015
 SFI Foundation 31.1/2010
 SFI Foundation 31.1/2005 (expiry 31.12.2018)

It's that "(expiry 31.12.2018)" that I was talking about, I thought we had 2 years left with Snell 2005 M helmets.

If I recall correctly we operate under ASN Canada rules.  I'm hoping they continue to allow Snell 2005 M until the above 2018 date because the Calgary club has a bunch of loaner helmets that are 2005 M.

Where did you find out that M2005 is no good after this year?  (asks a fellow M2005 helmet owner...)

Technical Talk / Re: Lots of Street class moves in this month's Fastrack
« on: October 24, 2016, 10:54:23 AM »
Moving the Fiesta was never on the table, and is almost definitely never going to happen.

Note also that the HS national championship has never been won in a Fiesta -- a Mini's won every year since 2008.

Are you basing the almost definitely never going to happen on the fact that the Fiesta ST has never won a national championship or on other reasons?

Also, are you arguing that the Mini SHOULD be moving classes? :D

When I saw a big list of street class revisions I got excited - hoping they would finally remove the cheater car from HS but they didn't touch it :(
I'll go back to my corner to pout.

(I'm talking about the Fiesta ST in case it isn't obvious)

I use a HJC CS-5, it is Snell M2005 rated so it's still eligible for at least a couple more years.  I bought it back in 2010 right before the 2010 rated helmets came out for about $70 at blackfoot motorsports.  After that time they have treated me so poorly that it pains me to recommend them but they might be the cheapest place if you find you need a new helmet.

For checking the rating, I believe mine only says DOT on the back but inside if you pull back the padding there is a SNELL certification sticker.  Check all around on yours.

Thanks for the awesome pictures!  I believe your picture of my car is the first time a Hyundai has ever looked cool :)

Also, in typical me style, I managed to have my eyes closed in the picture...  Err, I mean you've discovered my secret!  Once I leave the start line I close my eyes and let the force guide me.

I'm just out for fun, I have no intention of being competitive, so I class myself in a manner that won't cause a stink. The car is stock (100whp/2900lbs) aside from suspension and seats.

That's cool - if you ever want to figure out the right class I (or probably many other people on here) would be more than happy to lend a hand parsing out the rules.
You put down some pretty decent times and I noticed it was suspiciously flat when cornering so when I put that together with FSP it got me wondering.

Murray - I like your interpretation, if any part of the cone is in the box it doesn't count.  I've sort of had a checklist of unusual ways to NOT get a cone penalty I was working on.  Previously it consisted of only 3 things:

1) Make the cone do a flip and land upright touching the box
2) Run over a cone flattening it but have it pop back up and stay touching the box
3) Drive over top of a cone without touching it (i.e. tripod over a cone)

I have accomplished the last 2, and although I watched you do the first one I have not been able to replicate it.  Now I've got something new to add to the list!

Oh, one more thing!

I wouldn't have thought to ever ask this before, but how do cones count when they shatter?  Do we go by the biggest remaining piece?  I saw one where the base was run over smashing off one corner which flew well out of the box, but enough of the base remained for the majority of the cone to remain upright and within the box.  I assume that didn't count but how much of the cone has to leave the box (separated from the cone that remains within the box)?  50.0001%?

My somewhat restrictive opinions on tire choice for today:
I didn't feel safe driving the Focus on RE-71Rs to the event so I brought the Elantra on General Altimax RT-43s (super cheap all seasons).  I felt severely held back by the tires, they just got super greasy and wore off in chunks from the shoulders.  I think there was enough grip out there to warrant the sticky tires.

I think further than just considering the tire compound it is also worth considering how much tread was left on the tires and how heat cycled out or old they were.  I think even 2 tires of the same model might behave differently once it gets this cold depending on their history.

So often we see a course where there is a clear right answer, and a car where there is a clear right setup.  It is nice to see people trying out different things to see what sticks! (pun intended)
I regret my decision to bring the Elantra today, even more so when I read the scores and discovered I was bumped another 3 positions all the way to 16th in the final minutes of the day :(

Great job everybody putting on this event - I had a blast today despite the weather and numb-to-the-point-of-painful feet I was suffering.

Also - just curious, but what was done to that 240 to put it all the way down in FSP?

With the forecast now being 1 with freezing drizzle I'd be fine with cancelling the event :(

Automotive Marketplace / Re: Looking for a garage ... and insurance?
« on: October 06, 2016, 10:27:23 AM »
I have great faith that you would be an excellent tenant - I was just making sure we could provide a facility that would suit your needs.  The garage I was thinking of is a single-car garage in Mount Pleasant.  Access wouldn't be a problem and it does have power but I am not sure if it would be big enough?  I asked my wife to check with her parents to see if it is available, and if it is I'll send you the address so you can street view it or drive by or something to figure out if it would work for you.  I know the tenants in the house right now don't drive or own a car but the garage might be currently used for storage.

Is this just for storing a car in?  My wife's family has a couple rental properties and I think one of their garages might be empty.  It's in the Mount Pleasant / Tuxedo area.  I'll check with her.
