Title: Budget YYC Lot Pictures - April 2nd
Post by: 94boosted on April 02, 2018, 09:14:35 PM
I was in the area today so I snapped a few pictures of the lot, there needs to be a lot of melting if we're going to have an event in 13 days  :-[

Crazy question, but does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to plow the lot?

No point in holding an event if it's still this cold in two weeks, but if it warms up, plowing now could mean the difference between having a clear lot in a few weeks and not.

I have a contact and can ask, But first question is will Budget let us plow? Is it an insurance issue because we are a third party asking to have the lot plowed?
If budget says its OK then I can ask.
Also will they let us pile snow say around the lamp posts? (Wouldn't have to be there as long then ) That lot I'm guessing would require a rubber tire loader, not just a bobcat or he would be there for a few days because of the crusts that has formed on the snow and a pickup plow set up could work but not sure they could push it all off the lot.
Let me know if you want me to ask.
Do we know the dimensions of the lot and grid? I'm not sure if he will need that info.

Rob

I was at the lot trying to get to the storage locker last weekend (Mar 24). From the height of the drifts on the far concrete pedestals, it doesn't look like it melted much before it got cold again. I got our truck high centered and stuck in the grid area where it looked about the same as Tom's photos. There's drifts that are 2ft high and very hard/sugary snow over a sheet of ice. The Budget guy who does the plowing came to the rescue, and said he got the plow stuck twice in that area so he wasn't even going to attempt plowing past there (towards the autox area).

That said, if it does warm up next week, maybe we can convince Budget to try again?

Building access and clearing snow is something I oversee at work for our sites, if we had a rubber tired front end loader to clear this entire site (grid, pits, tech area, course) I would expect the costs to be in the neighborhood of 2 grand all in. The hauling in and out of equipment would be a big chunk of this cost. I think that makes it a bit cost prohibitive.

Another potential option would be to push the first event by a week to April 22nd, an extra week of above 0 temperatures would really help (the 14 day trend looks good starting April 9th).

Makes me think of another winter school!   :)

However, if the temps recover to double digits, it will melt pretty quickly ... and moreso if there are a few tracks out there.  Someone want to do a few laps?   ;)

I have to go over there some time to pick up the legal documents/agreement from Budget (they have signed it btw).

Or if the situation does not improve, we could move it back another week as Tom suggested which is probably the best solution if we cannot hold the event due to the snow.

Or an ice dice?

^The conditions are much worse than during the last winter school. The crusts on the drifts are too solid to chew up with a truck. It can support the weight of a 3/4 ton truck in many places, and will leave you high centered once your tires fall through and start grinding deeper into the snow. Maybe a monster truck ice dice would work...

Compacted snow and ice crust like that would need a wheel loader to clear, not just a truck with plow.  I think we will just need to be patient and hope the weather warms up quickly.  8)

If any of it could be cleared to the pavement it would all clear a lot faster afterwards I bet.

Yes, I agree ... just need a bit of bare pavement.

I will be heading over there some time soon to pick up our agreement and will do a few "runs" around the yard in my truck to break up the snow a bit.  I also have some work coming in the NE soon so it might be another chance to swing by ... Falconridge is close by.

From the pictures it looks like there's a VW club in town that's been using the lot. I can see Rabbits have been out there running around.

A bit of bare pavement would accelerate the melting process especially next week when we get sunny and double digit plus temperatures. But even though the last couple days with the temps below zero, the snow is disappearing, this time of year the sun is intense and surface temps are above freezing. It won't be long.

Maybe a few of us should do some laps, say, next weekend?    :)

Weather is looking more "normal" for next week with highs near 10 Deg. C (normal high is 9C for today):

With those temps the melting should be significant.  Some tire tracks on the lot would help, of course.

An interesting point though ... here in Silver Springs it is -2C right now ... and only -6C at the airport.    Some haze around I guess.

How is the lot secured during the week? I might be able to go to the lot and drive on it to break up the snow a bit next week if I can get in.

You can get access via the gate on the east side right at the Budget offices on Barlow Trail (off of south-bound Barlow).  There is a gate there and a gate house on the left (south) ... just check in at the gate house and say you are with us ... then travel directly south from there via a small gate in the interior and then west from there past the rows of new Nissan vehicles stored there temporarily.

Should we officially postpone the first practice now, since there's now an additional 10-15 cm of snow on the lot?

There was maybe an inch on the ground in my part of the city this afternoon and melting.  I drove by last night and it did not look much different and Budget had plowed out the access to the lot from their side.

I think if we wait a day or two to see how much melting goes on - the sun is strong now and the weather forecast is sunny and +8C for tomorrow.  I bet a lot of melting takes place.

Weather is sunny 9-10 Deg. C for Sat/Sun.  What little snow we get Thursday will be long gone and then some.

I'll take a run over there this week to see how actual conditions are and it is no problem to move the event then....really only need a day's notice if that.

Good news: there's a decent patch of bare pavement in the northwest corner of the lot, and a few other small bare patches here and there.

Bad news: most of the lot, and all of the paddock, are still covered in snow. Most of it is still quite thick, and features a hard crust under some softer snow (presumably what fell over the weekend). I tried to get in to break up the snow a bit, but the guy at the Budget office wouldn't let me in without pre-clearance from "the guy with the beard".

That actually doesn't look as bad as I was expecting.

Possibility of rain over the next 2-3 days would knock that down to slush.  If Jesus says it's ok and the budget guy lets somebody in, a few tracks would make a world of difference.

Yes, it is less than I expected ... did not expect to see any clear spots yet, that's for sure!  I did not have time to get there today and will see about it tomorrow.

A few tire tracks would speed up the progress for sure.

I think a big factor is the sun being higher in the sky and of course the warmer temps today and for the remainder of the week.  The weekend is supposed to be double digits ... 10-12 degrees both days ... should finish off a lot of snow around the city.

I expect to be up there again later this week. If someone can get the aforementioned pre-clearance, I'd be happy to drive around on the lot to try to disperse some snow.

I guess I am the "breaded guy"?   dunno ... might be Jamil over there.  Anyway, I suspect they are being more strict with their security because I notice they now keep the gate closed all the time whereas during business hours it used to be open all the time.  And, of course, if they don't know who you are, they are less likely to let you in.  I haven't had a problem but I have been there very often and talked with the gate people quite a bit so they know who I am.

Anyway, let me know when you are planning to go and I'll see if I can get you in or maybe we can meet there or something?

I don't know when exactly I'll be back -- it depends on when UrbanX tells me they're done mounting my tires. I'll text you when I have a specific day and time.

It's still days away, but right now Environment Canada says it's going to be 15 degrees on Saturday (https://weather.gc.ca/city/pages/ab-52_metric_e.html). If so, and the lot's looking reasonably clear on Friday, we should consider having a shoveling party on Saturday to clear the remaining snow.

I drove by the lot very early this morning when our flight got in and I'd say about 75% of the snow is gone. Seems like the majority of the snow is just stuck around the perimeter (it was pitch black though).

Paul T. was by there this morning (8:15 am) and text'd me this photo ... looks pretty good in the middle with puddles and dry spots ... and snow along the edges.   Probably the original snow drifts along the fences where it would pile up but they are probably gone for the most part today.  I might drive by tomorrow - not sure yet.

Lot is ready....mostly dry... a few minor drifts at edges that do not matter.

That is a new forecast but it looks like that is for south 1/2 of Alberta so who knows exactly what we will get locally.

However, the rest of the week is good.  The snow will be gone within 2 days which would be typical for spring weather here.  We get these dumps in the spring and then they melt pretty much right away.

Good thing I did not change my tires today ... studded tires are still on!   ;)

I dropped off the PA and glasses this afternoon before they closed.

Lot looks pretty good ... will load more photos on the FB page.

Then checked for asphalt patching materials at Home Depot ....think we'll have a work day and setup day next Saturday so we can have more lot for our course.   See if we can remove more curbs and such.
