General Discussion / Re: February Beer NIght
« on: February 18, 2016, 12:53:19 PM »
My main issue is the start time.  I'm not going to hang around work late, and if I go home, I'm not driving back in to the city.  5:30 is a more appropriate start time for me, though if work is light on a Friday I'm likely long gone before 5 anyways.

Agree with other comments about trying to stay out of downtown.  I don't think it's too bad but I work fairly close by to the core.  Plenty of options outside the core have parking lots.

Reijo, did Fort Macleod respond this week?

Only one little problem.  UPS managed to damaged the packaging from Bilstein and loose on of my custom valved rear shocks!

Yikes!

Technical Talk / Re: Snell 2005 helmets not allowed next year?
« on: January 29, 2016, 04:24:14 PM »
Via Doug Campbell on the CSCC forum:

"The current Autoslalom/Autocross/ice dice rules from 2015 allow the Snell 2005M helmets until the end of 2018. 2000M helmets expired last year. 2010M and 2015M helmets are also allowed. No expiry date set for these years at this time. The SoloSport committee believes an error or omission exists on the FIA list 25 at this time. It is our intention to continue to allow Snell M rated helmets for the above events.

Tentative dates are a good start for now - thanks.  Hope to hear from Ft. Macleod fairly promptly on the race days for the rest of the season.

Is it another joint SASC/CSCC championship this year?

I meant arbitrary in terms of these sudden and late breaking changes.  A helmet that was good for years (as of June 13, 2015) is now being obsoleted much earlier.  What if I had bought an M2015 helmet in the last 6 months?  Or an M2010?

I did just buy a M2015 helmet after waiting all season to get something that would be up to date and last for a while given minimal abuse of ~10 events per year.   >:( >:( >:( >:(

Via the Snell Website:
"What are the differences between the SA, M and K standards?

The SA standard was designed for competitive auto racing while the M standard was for motorcycling and other motorsports. The K standard was released to accommodate helmets used in karting. There are three major differences between them:

The SA standard requires flammability test while the M and K standards do not.
The SA and K standards allow for a narrower visual field than the M standard (Some SA and K certified helmets may not be street legal).
The SA and K standards include a rollbar multi-impact test while the M standard does not."

I think the argument could easily be made to ASN that unless all SoloSport is going to require prep including fire suppression and roll bars, there is no sense in going to SA-only helmets.  That certainly goes against the whole point of SoloSport's accessibility to Average-Joe.

Well... for better or worse, I've launch my mini-series on a public channel

https://youtu.be/EUNagMxRCR0

Yes, I know it isn't that technical... at all, haha. I wanted to just give a quick overview of autocross to people who are not familiar with it.

It was surprisingly hard to do. You always see people on Youtube and they are so casual about it... I did probably 200 takes, it was like as soon as I was plunked in front of a camera my mind went to jelly or something.

I guess the good news is that my next video is going to be an overview of my Fiesta for 2016, and the one after that will be some of the modifications and new parts that are going on it. I think it will be easier to do than the intro video because there won't be as much face time with the camera.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think. I plan to have fun with it this year, so it should be kind of interesting to follow!

Subscribed.  That Dub'd Escalade was on rails man.

The YouTube thing sound cool Nick.  And Mr. Canuck that Volvo is awesome, I'm sure you'll do just fine.

Not sure what I'm doing, have a project car that would be more suited to the task than my truck, but I cringe at the idea of painting it and then hitting a cone or two or more.  Not even sure it'd have the body work ready anyways.  I feel like I could wrap it myself for a year or two, but even the vinyl isn't cheap.

Is the plan for another combined SASC/CSCC series this year?  The Westerner seems like a scheduling challenge again this year, with them asking us to combine with the Red Deer SCC events I believe.  Club is nice people but there is big difference in how the clubs run their events.  Chris is chasing a couple other options but I think he's got his work cut out for him.

Engineering, procurement and construction... EPC

As opposed to PMC,  which is project management consultancy/contract

Also there is EP, which is engineering and no construction... And EPCM, which includes management.

There goes 30 seconds of your life you will never get back  ;D

*And PC which is what I do!

Any plans to go yourself?  I think you mentioned not being around much next season.  Trying to line up my summer vacation ideas - the Helena Top Gun fits the tail end of a road trip I am toying with.  Of course this assumes the Supra will have had a good shake-down by then.

Some people may wish to only run one day to save money/tires/time (e.g. staying overnight etc. takes time) ... due to budget etc.

R

This was my strategy.  Made sure to hit 7 events for scoring reasons.  No cost of overnights, half the event cost too by skipping Saturday.  There's only so much variety that we can squeeze out of the two locations we have (club is doing a good job with what we have) so double-header weekends don't seem that appealing to me.  Personally I don't think I had much left to squeeze out of the performance of my vehicle anyways.  ie. my overall score would be very similar if I had run more than 7 scoring events.

Also I think we don't need to worry about discouraging people from coming out with format changes.  If people want to try, they'll come out.  The people at the top of the score boards are there to stay unless someone with significant experience and the right vehicle come from another location.  If anything we should encourage the people who only come to one or two events to get out for a 3rd or 4th.  But that's a different discussion for a different thread, and it raises the issue of having to many competitors at events.

I'd like to see a stat that spits out a cones-per-run ratio in Murray's software.  Completely irrelevant to the performance or PAX group of a car.  Something that the folks not at the top of the RAW/PAX scoreboard could strive towards winning.

just thinking out loud, but the club could probably get a 1 or 2 year lease on a city/trend-line Golf that would be even cheaper and significantly more reliable than a clunker, plus with some advertising decals on it they could write off the lease payments at the same time.

EDIT: Never mind, I just remembered the "no insurance" waiver, and I doubt any lease company would agree to that

If it were a diesel VW they still might go for it!

Today was tough but things started to come together in the afternoon.  Good challenge!

Had a great first season with the club and looking forward to next April to start again, perhaps in a vehicle that's more competitive?
