Jill Snell is the event chair and she asked whether I would do the course design this year. Of course, I was quite elated and will be doing just that! 8)
Who's coming?

I see some of us are already signed up ... Wayne, Julie, and Jim. ;)

I'm seriously considering it, my first SCCA event sounds exciting. What is involved in getting all correctly signed up with SCCA. Seems like I need a membership with a club down south? Anyone care to point the newbie in the right direction? :o
-
You can buy an SCCA membership on-line ... $150 I believe ... have to renew mine in fact. www.scca.com
However, if this is the only one SCCA event you plan to attend I believe you can buy a day membership for Packwood. At least you could in the past .. should confirm that.
It is a great event and worth attending ... about an 8 hr. drive for you and we would be travelling through Cranbrook to get there ... caravan? There is also the Pro the week after at Packwood. Sometimes I just stay the week ... hike etc. Beautiful there!
On the other hand if you want to head to Lincoln for the Nats in Sept with us? Just buy the regular membership! :)

I wasn't expecting to be able to go, but things took a weird bounce and I might end up doing one of the Tour or Pro after all.
Super long shot, but would anyone be interested in driving or transporting my Mini there and back in exchange for a codrive, gas, and hotel costs? I wouldn't find that deal appealing if someone offered it to me, but I figure it can't hurt to ask. ;D Edit: Found a ride.

This is actually a really good deal for anyone with more time than cash. There's likely no cheaper way to attend than this offer and Stephens car is well prepared and capable.
-
I'm all signed up for event, names on the list. The scca website didn't want to take my CC info to pay for membership but their system for event registration was happy to, I can always just pay weekend membership at event and it can goto membership later.
*edit* I see I can join the northwest region and get my scca membership
-
As Reijo noted, I'm signed up. I will be at both the Tour and ProSolo. Last year was my first time to Packwood and first SCCA event. Looking forward to my "do-over" this year. :0
-
I'm planning on going with my wife (though she isn't co-driving). My co-drive plans changed so if someone is interested in co-driving my vette PM me.
-
Wow, what an offer! :D I'd be down for that but the only vehicle that I'd drive there with is my autox car ::)

I'm in for the Pro in a borrowed HS Fiesta ST. 8)

Thanks again for putting your car out there... excited to see what pans out...
Any recommendations for places to stay from anyone?
-
If you have not booked a room in Packwood yet, I doubt you'll find any available.
Packwood is not that big a town.
Randle and Morton, to the west on Hwy 12, may have availability.
Or try VRBO... You may find something small and reasonably priced there.
-
There are a number of options on AirBnB too.
-
Definitely take the time to call the local hotels. Determining real availability on expedia and the like is not accurate.
-
How not to get protested at Packwood? I'm busy back pedaling now and seeing what it takes to move back to STU trim. One thing "No modify the pcv systems" makes me have to remove my new air/oil operator. Now, if I disconnect new plumbing to aos and reinstall stock pcv system but leave my aos mounted in place will that pass a protest as all it would be at that point added weight doing nothing?
-
That should be fine. Packwood is pretty relaxed.
-
I can't see you getting protested if you reinstall your stock PCV system and leave the air/oil separator in place. A protestor would also have a hard time proving a competitive advantage.
Furthermore, I'm not familiar with your specific setup, but air / oil separators are actually (sometimes) legal:
From 13.10.E:
"The installation of water expansion tanks is allowed. The installation of oil
catch tanks or oil separators is allowed provided the function of the PCV
system remains functional."
13 is the Street section of the rulebook, but Street Touring inherits that rule, so as long as your PCV system is still functional, you're good to go.
-
My aos isn't legal since it removes the pcv. I was going to remove it but now I find my actual turbo inlet pipe may not be stu legal either.
The real kicker is my clutch isn't OEM spec and that kicks me out of stu anyway.
On another note, I've read the rules over and over and one thing I was mistaken was that I was in SM. My back seat is going back in (only weight savings was 30lbs) so I can go back into asp. Still no r comps so my pax will still be terrible :( Too bad we don't have Street tire prepared and modified pax multipliers being used.
Anyway, I had high hopes of placing well in stu at Packwood but I'll have to settle in just focus on improving my driving and ignoring pax.
-
There is no PAX in Packwood (or any national event). You are only competing against people in the same class.
-
Mikkos in STU ... tough competition. ASP has less but there are still people signing up ... never know who shows up from the west coast....all the way down to San Diego.....and Colorado, Texas, Utah, Arizona, etc.
http://www.scca.com/events/1981896-2016-tire-rack-packwood-championship-tour/entry_list?page=3&offset=100
-
Only 129 entries thus far ... will more than double ... 18 days to enter yet ... Typically the entry at Packwood is somewhere between 250-300 (can be over 300).
-
So far I'm one of three for asp, maybe we are all on street tires ;D but not likely

I'd say that Geoff Clark is the one to watch out for at Packwood, He won there in ASP last year as well as in STU the three years before. Also was a top runner at Nationals when he has made the trip to Lincoln. I would recommend chatting with him and seeing what tips you can pick up.
-
Always great to have a target to aim for! Any rules against having passengers during the comp?
-
No passengers allowed.
-
Always great to have a target to aim for! Any rules against having passengers during the comp?
Local events down south allow passengers but not any regional or National level events. If you see the course at-speed it is an advantage, therefore it is not allowed.
As for Geoff, expect that he will be pretty much fully prepared car-wise. There might only be some small item here or there of little significance not done to the car ... if any. All the major "stuff" allowed in the class will be done. Period. It will be fast. And a good measuring stick because of that and his driving ability. And, you know what? That is a good thing, and something worth taking a close look at.
But something I would recommend if at all possible is getting yourself a set of Hoosiers to run on ... even used ones will be faster than street tires. About 2 seconds right there.
-
I've been searching around with no luck for Hoosiers, probably won't happen in time for Packwood at this point. My tire choice is similar to what Corvettes/Porsches like to run as well but often they don't run a square set and only a pair for sale here and there.
Without the Hoosiers I'm still happy with the way my car is behaving lately, if I can feel like I left as little time out on the course as a driver and put my car to it fullest then I couldn't be happier no matter where I place.
-
Packwood is this week. Is anyone caravaning? When is everyone heading down?
I still have to sort out what, if anything, I am driving, place to stay (bring my tent just in case I think?), etc. too much on my plate ... However the course design is done except for corner station maps which is minimal and course maps to print out ... setup maps to print etc. ... I spent some time on the course so I hope it works like I planned ... easy but yet not really. :)
I have to be in Packwood early on Friday so I'm thinking I will leave early on Thursday and get there for Thursday evening ... before dark. I might stay overnight Wed. night in Invermere since my bro has a home there.

281 entries as of right now ... I will be 282 I suppose ... so a little shy of 300.

Before I book a room for myself in Packwood - anyone want to share? Cuts costs obviously. Or if you do not have a room booked, let me know, asap.
-
I assumed Packwood is all booked up and I myself is planning to bring camping gear to camp in a campsite near by. Now it seems like my GF might not be able to come and I might be sleeping under the roofs on site. If you do get a room and my GF isn't coming I would share for sure.
As it is, I'm having last minute mechanical issues to sort out before I leave for Packwood and seeing how much tread is left on my tires actually makes me worried more lol.
-
You know you can camp on-site ... under the roof? ... cheap ... think the donation of $20 goes to a local charity. It is nicely situated so you are dry on rainy days ... inside a large building...with the pits. Only thing you have to watch for is where the pigeons perch themselves on the steel girders .. hang their rear out and dump their contents ... same with where you park your car. ;)
However, I'll let you know what the situation is wrt accommodations etc. When are you driving down?

Thanks for photos. Been watching vids too to try and not be overwhelmed by the different course designs big stateside venues square pads allow. I'm leaving Thursday night and camping close by in order to be there for full test and tune.
If the forecast holds up my bridgestones might get a break and have less wear due to the rain lowering speeds but sucks for tenting ::)

You're welcome!
The course design won't be much more devious than what you are seeing here locally. I have done the Packwood course design this year! LOL! :)
However, we can get big turns in Packwood that we cannot see on a narrow runway. Just think patience ... set the car and hold it there ... patiently. :)
Lots of "white space" too ... so you have to find the right lines ... look ahead (always!) ... but also be mindful of marbles ... something we do not see much of here ... Come for a course walk with me ...

Final entry count is 284 ... there may be a few drops and last minute additions (I know of some who are not in the list) ...
Weather! Sounds like rain on Friday and Saturday with a possibility on Sunday. Everyone be prepared with rain gear, umbrellas etc. etc.

My DS ride fizzled but now looking at ES MR2 ... might be a good choice for rainy conditions....to be confirmed.
I may be heading to Invermere and crash at the bro's place Wed.....then travel to Packwood on Thursday. Need to be setting up the course on Friday morning early. Don't know if that works for convoying with anyone ... let me know.
Have a safe trip everyone!

The Packwood Championship Tour is this coming weekend: July 8-10 and the Pro is on the following weekend.
There are a number of us heading down to compete from Edmonton (Jim W. and Tom K.) and Calgary (Julie, Cam/Jess, Wayne, Matt K - Cranbrook, and myself ... either STR or ES it looks like ...

Thanks! And, no duty! ;) hahaha
Confirmed ... I'll be in the Ayers '6 STR Miata .. .pretty much fully prepared but in a tough class with Kevin Dietz (he was 2nd by something like 0.078 sec. over 2 days at Nats last year!) and others - should be a challenge and fun!

-
Reijo, I should be getting in on Thursday night, staying at the Mountain View. Call me on Fri AM if you need some help setting up.
-
Sure! I am in Invermere right now for the night and dropping off tires in the morning to Matt in Cranbrook then down the road. I am in the Packwood Inn....still a couple of rooms left there... not a fancy place though. ... right beside the pizzaria. What is your timing through here?
-
BTW, I have two guys helping me already but another hand is always welcome. I am meeting the event chair, Jill Snell on-site Friday morning at 7 am to place the SCCA timing trailer and will then proceed to set up the course thereafter ... so maybe anytime after about 8 am would be good to help out ... if you are bored and looking for something to do! :) I suppose it may be a help to see what we are doing to set up the course! :)
thanks,
Reijo

It looks like I'll be co-driving with Mark Deregt in his 2007 STR Honda S2000 against Ron Bauer in the ND and Kevin Dietz in his S2000 plus a whole host of others ... one of the larger classes. Fun, fun, fun! :)
-
Arrived in Packwood with Matt ... at Packwood Inn ... see SCCA vehicles and other misc. sports cars at the pub .... people are starting to arrive ... going to Blue Spruce pub for coolie soon ... Jim? See you there?
-
Reijo and I have arrived in Packwood! He was lucky enough, or more like I was lucky enough to find a set of older but hopefully still life left Hoosiers to fit on my stock rims. Tomorrow is the test and tune where I get to see if they are going to play nice for me.
-
^^ Nice!
Good luck guys
-
So the Hoosiers passed the test and tune today. For an old set I couldn't be happier. No major rubbing and they are definitely aren't a dead set. Bit of a learning curve though, hopefully tomorrow and I can bring it all together for the 3 runs we get.
-
What size are they? How does using R-comps affect your PAX time?
-
What size are they? How does using R-comps affect your PAX time?
His PAX multiplier already assumes that he would be running R-comps so no issues there. Also, at Packwood, PAX is rarely discussed as all trophies are class based. (someone usually calculates PAX results after the event but it's not an official result)
-
Really good Day One for Cam, sitting in first in AS. Ryan is second in SS and a bunch of our guys are sitting just out of the trophies. Best of luck tomorrow everyone.
http://sololive.scca.com/CT/index.php
-
Wooo-hooo, go Cam & Ryan! 8)
-
Tom K is just out of the trophies in BS only 62 thousandths back of the last trophy position.
Wayne is less than 2 tenths out of the trophies in CS.
Julie is just out of the trophies in ESL.
Tom G is just out of the trophies in SSP.
Best of luck picking up a spot or two.
A few others are struggling, which is part of the rollercoaster that is Packwood. Hopefully you are enjoying the experience at the very least.
-
So Tom K ended up with a trophy, joins by Wayne and Ryan and class winning cam! Winning a trophy here is no small feat. Almost 300 people and I would observe half the competitors as trophy contenders in their respective class.
I myself can walk away with valuable things to have learned. In other words, I got schooled ;D
-
I took a bunch of photos for various reasons ... some for no reason. Some unfortunately did not turn out well (it seemed that I somehow hooked or hit the autofocus switch on the lens without noticing so some are out of focus ... my apologies. Nevertheless, the photos can still be informative in showing what line some people took in certain places, etc.).
