The San Diego Match Tour is on today (done runs) and tomorrow.
I note that Ron Bauer in the new Miata is leading CS and Jeff Cawthorne is barely in 2nd place in STR in his new Miata (I don't think he is quite fully prepared yet but he is a national-level/calibre driver!

Actually they are still running ... must be almost done.

Only 1 competitor in HS? :o

Only 1 competitor in HS? :o
Sign of the times in the US maybe? Economy recovering so more people going into more "expensive" classes.

I'd think it's more of a location based turnout. Last years San Diego tour event only had 2 in HS. The place you will see a good picture of where the classes sit will be at spring nationals.

Match Tours don't seem to attract as many people ... some may be saving tires for the Pro at El Toro next weekend ... only about an hour's drive north of San Diego ... SE LA/Orange County/Irvine.

What is winning STX?
"Ford C-Max Hybrid"?

Saw a photo on the SCCA article...looked like a Fusion or Focus or something.

That is correct. Who'd have thunk a hybrid! But Jonathan Lugod is competitive.
Trophied 3rd at Nationals in his 2000 C5 Corvette in STU, which he sold this winter.
I talked to him last spring at Crows Landing about his STU C5.

I'm not sure why Match Tours don't attract the numbers. Personally I'm intrigued by the format and think it has real potential locally.
3 runs Sat am + 3 runs Sat pm = Class Champions... just like a Championship Tour event.
3 runs Sun am to qualify for Top Dog, Under Dog or Lucky Dog shootouts run on Sun pm.

I wonder if it is the electric motor torque and CVT that are helping vs the higher reving/lower torque competitors (BRZ, RX8). Interesting in any case.

Turns out Lugod's Match Tour entry listed 2015 Ford C-Max Hybrid was wrong.
He's actually running a 2015 Focus ST in STX this year.

Glad you found that. I've been having a hard time sleeping since thinking a hybrid Ford had won..

2012 Packwood Tour there was a Tesla in SS that year. Placed 6th out of 11 cars.
Interesting watching, listening to him run with Hoosiers. Silence......
Seemed to me there was something missing out of that automotive motorsport experience.

To be fair on his first run you could hear rocks hitting the underside of his car. I wouldn't want to be working on course at a tour or national event though (no warning that the car is coming and very little time between cars)

As a follow up on the C-Max hybrid, there has already been a protest mailed to the event chair for the Crows Landing ProSolo about registering as this car and running another. Once this was made known on Facebook he changed his registration to a 2015 Ford Transit Connect Wagon. Seems that the driver is having fun with everyone while somebody else can not take a joke.
Edit: Someone can take a joke and take it one step further.

haha, I can certainly appreciate the joke ;D
-
Note that the date of the protest was April 1.....and was by Mike Palero (a buddy of his in LA). ;)

I have a feeling this running joke will continue for quite some time.
