I also think it would be a lot of fun for a group of SASC members to pitch in for a cheap beater and then run a mini championship on a few of our practice days with it.

I dont mind donating the use of my winter beater ( 2003 Accord 5 speed with 280k km's.... ) for this haha

I did indeed over simplify in order not to create a huge post of different scenarios that can occur in this style of event.

I thought I would have a really hard time matching my morning run but actually got faster by a good margins. What happens when that occurs is you are given a new index time, basically if you get a good deal faster on a run and advance, sure you won that round but now you must meet your new time.  If someone really breaks out away from their time and it is suspected they may not have really been  giving their all for index time then they are disqualified.

I think that would need to be looked at carefully though. We are really a good bunch of drivers but a lot of use are still not near our max performance and so we leave seconds not tenths or thousands on the course and thus can see rather large improvements by getting a troublesome element nailed down and get that great(never perfect) run in.

Why a beater? Car rental companies have some pretty hot cars these days -- when I flew to Seattle for the Pro, the car rental agent tried to convince me to upgrade to a C7 Corvette.

Split a set of tires from Costco and we're potentially in for less than $100 a head depending on how many people participate.

Isn't it generally against the rental policy to be taking their cars onto a course? Plus with no insurance I'd be worried about damaging the car.

With a beater neither of those are a major concern. Plenty of 500$ cars out there are mechanically sound, just a crappy body. If we tow it out there somehow there isn't even paper work needed on it.

Appreciate the feedback.
My intent was to encourage competition, reward consistency, remove factors of car prep & driver ability, and above all have fun.

My learnings...
- works best in multiples of 16 cars, 16 - 32 - 48 - 64, etc. Odd numbers and bye rounds are troublesome. And I don't want to leave anyone out.
- announcing competitors, winners, margin of win, breakouts, etc would add to the spirit.
- need to implement a breakout rule... SCCA simple rule is a breakout factor of 1.5x towards next round... so if you breakout by 0.50 sec, your next index run time is lowered by 0.75 sec.
- and yes, I do want to run this event again... Stay tuned.

p.s.
I also like the idea of a beater challenge. I'm sure we can put something together on this front.

For those interested in a Beater Challenge...We're running one.  Peter Brook and I hatched this idea some time ago and while not autocross related, if you're a little nuts - you're our kind of people.

That sounds like a ridiculous amount of fun

If I had disposable cash right now I'd be all over it, haha
