Title: Nicks Media Thread
Post by: NickST on April 28, 2016, 08:54:14 PM
I plan to post photos and video throughout the year, figured I would keep it all contained in one thread to make it easy to find:

For video I put this together for Terry this evening. I have a lot more video, but no time right now:

That's outstanding, I like how it looks like you have a crew, all the different shots but Nick can you make me look better? Everybody that was there knows that l was off course.

haha, I will just edit those cones a little closer! A lot of this was experimental this time around, just getting familiar with the new equipment.

I also was going to do some straight run footage video for everybody I slapped a camera on as well.

I am hoping to have a housing for one my new cameras next time so I can finally retire my GoPro. The front footage is always way more dramatic than on the roof, but too exposed for cameras without cases.

The other thing I want to do is setup a tripod so I can get some external footage that it isn't so shakey. I picked up a Nikon microphone as well which should give some decent car sound.

What I'd like to do is get a camera inside and outside of other peoples cars so I can alternate between shots in a run. I think that would be fun.

Great Vids Nick - thanks for posting.  Can you list the details of your set-up?

The onboard cameras are a pair of Xioami Yi's recording at 1080p @ 60fps, however the front and rear video from the Fiesta came from my old GoPro, which is 960p @ 30fps.

The Yi's can actually record at 2K @ 30fps, but 1080p seems good enough to me. They also do 720p @ 120fps for 4x slow motion, although I have not figured out where to use that yet.

In addition I have my trusty dash cam, which is a Blackvue DR400G-HD. It records at 1080p @ 30fps and also overlays the speed based on GPS. (BTW the fastest recorded speed was 98km/h going into the finish, and about 90km/h going into the V).

I also plan to use my Nikon D5300 for video a bit more. It records at 1080p @ 60fps. I just picked up a Nikon ME-1 microphone for it this year as well. On the tripod it should return nice looking video, in hand it is too shakey though.

If someone wants a very slow motion shot of their suspension working, I now have a camera that can do up to1000 frames a second.  At that speed, it can only record a video that is 4 seconds long, so it's not good for extended shots, but fine for going around a selected corner.

That sounds fairly specialized, what camera do you have Murray? Does it record in HD?

Thanks for the list...I just bought an SJCam 5000-X Elite and am interested in getting some fun shots. Your video integration is excellent and really captures the moment.  I can tell you that your car looks way faster from the outside!  Inside you look really relaxed - outside you've got a wheel cocked in the air like a dog in a field of fire hydrants!

Not specialized -- just a very good pocket camera (Sony DSC-RX100).  It can record HD up to 4K, although I cannot think of any place where I would use that resolution.

Didn't grab a lot of footage this weekend, but this view from under the rear of the car was pretty neat. I apparently only drive with 3 wheels, haha.

I'll edit and remove this if you want, but I think you need to know - there was daylight under both wheels on one side of your car:

http://i.imgur.com/GTqjl1X.jpg

It's kind of hard to get single frames from a youtube video but there was a frame just one away that I couldn't seem to get it to stop on where I think it was more obvious.

That aside, nice video and I can't believe how decent the exposure is for being under your car.  I am also a frequent tripod-er (wait.. I have a feeling that has another meaning) and I was considering doing almost exactly this angle for a video but couldn't reliably get my camera mounted under there.  I was also thinking of doing the opposite, under the front looking back, trying to get the engine and exhaust and everything moving about but also some of the front suspension in frame.

You are more than welcome to use my mounting gear if you want to do it

In that shot the inside of the front tire is still in contact with the ground, my car has -1 degree of camber stock so that doesn't surprise me that it does that. Although on the first run set I was getting some scary front wheel hop over that pot hole, but after the course change in the afternoon it was better. One thing I found interesting was how much the sloping grade of Westerner works the suspension.

I had a 2 wheel experience in fort MacLeod last year. I was late on a slalom and got into a tank slapper. As soon as I felt it go up I gave up the run turned into it to bring it back down.

Try RowVid: http://rowvid.com/?v=H2PYRT7rG9c.

A well known American autocrosser got his Fiesta *way* up on two wheels two years ago and promptly sold the car:

I was following that incident with great interest. There was a roll over in Texas with a Fiesta ST, although from what I could dig up it was a novice on his first time out.

There have been roll overs for other cars (including the Mini) though, My own thoughts are that the RE-71R's are just too sticky for the street class. I wouldn't be all that upset if they changed the tread wear rating to 400 for street classes and just gave a better pax number instead.

Um, maybe there just to sticky for the Fiesta with its hight stance

Imagine back when Stock ran on Hoosiers... :o

The Fiesta is an interesting case. The non-ST Fiestas are actually banned due to rollover risk. I don't know the details of why the non-ST cars were banned while the ST ones weren't, but I've got to imagine that the ST is just over the SCCA's line of acceptability.

The occurrences have still been relatively few ... heck BMW's have been known to roll in autox.  So there is some risk however there are certain off-camber corners etc. that should be avoided in course design to help prevent such occurrences....plus other design "tricks" ... but these can occur.

My understanding is that the non-ST versions are right at the limit, and if you were to run 6mm spacers on each side for the wheels it would technically even meet the criteria for roll over risk and still be in stock class.

The ST versions are lowered a full inch compared to the non-ST which is why they got in. There is a similar story with the Fiat 500 and Abarth version.

ST's are probably just a bit lower than the regular ones ... just like the Fiat 500 vs. the Abarth ... very similar ... and more highly sprung/sway bars all resulting in less lean.

Even the suspension geometry is completely reworked in the ST compared to the non-ST... although it does actually have a smaller diameter front sway bar than the OEM. The reason I've heard for that is apparently to make the rear more lively. One of the mods that seems to be popular for guys racing the ST on a regular basis is to put in a standard Fiesta sway bar, as the aftermarket ones are apparently too stiff.

I wasn't trying to start a bashing session about the Fiesta ST being unsafe - I was just trying to let you know that you were running very close to the limit there and might want to focus on keeping body roll under control when considering upgrades or how you prepare your car - I didn't actually think many people checked this thread ;)
You are allowed a sway bar in street, no?  Perhaps it would be worth throwing the stock fiesta bar on there to help keep the front a little more level.  As much as I give you a hard time about beating me all the time I don't want to see anybody get hurt or lose their car.

I would also like to see the street class get downgraded a little bit tire-wise, many of the current autocross tires are just too damn sticky.  I'm often smashing my control arms into the subframe because the tires are stickier than the bushings are hard.

No worries, I never took it that way. It is an issue with the Fiesta, but personally I think the risk is fairly minimal and nearly zero with anybody that knows how to react if it starts to go up on two wheels.

I've been keeping my eye out for a wrecked Fiesta to snag the front bar, but generally I am fairly pleased with how the car is behaving right now.

I wouldn't mind a higher tread wear rating in street class just to make it more affordable... it is really expensive trying to keep up with the wear on my 71R's. However if you run any other tire, you are basically leaving time on the course.

I could be wrong but I'm not sure you can add a sway bar as it wasn't fitted from the factory. Been wrong before.

So long as you stick to only changing one sway bar you should be good.

13.7.A.
Substitution, addition, or removal of a single anti-roll bar and supporting hardware (brackets, endlinks, bushings, etc.) is permitted. The use of any bushing material is permitted. A bushing may be implemented as a bearing.

I didn't do any serious video this weekend, but I loaded my dash cam card out of curiosity. I wanted to see what kinds of speeds I was getting out of that long sweeper slalom. Obviously the  GPS was having some trouble keeping up, but it was a little bit over 100km/h.

https://youtu.be/G8xMCewIHk0

Here is my 2 lap run... it is sure a lot of fun to really heat the tires up and get that instant replay on elements, but man you start to get tired mentally after running for that long!

I managed the same feat as you, I neglected to record my poor driving as I was schooled and then recorded the last to runs after I started to drive well :) I'll have to get mine off the cam soon too.
