Other Events / LSCC Club Promotion
« on: August 01, 2018, 08:47:45 AM »
Instead of cluttering up the thread discussing the continued viability of Fort Macleod with a discussion about what's wrong with the LSCC Club (I'm VP), I thought I'd start another thread to see if I could get some advice.  As most of you know, we started back racing at Fort Macleod after a few years of dormancy when we lost the local Exhibition Ground site.  This is our second year hosting events at the Fort Macleod airport and we're suffering.  Few people are coming out, we're on MSReg and we advertise primarily on social media.

We were hoping that SASC members from Calgary would come down and join in the fun on the weekends when we're out at Fort Macleod.  I'm not on this board very often, so we haven't posted our events here.

What I'm looking for is ideas on how to do a little promotion of our events.

Things I know we need:
1. Local venue - probably solve all our problems if we could get something in the city - also not very likely.
2. Better attention to forum/facebook and other social media.

Not sure of what else might work - so I'm appealing to the knowledge base here.

I've had a few issues with brakes lately and have completely destroyed one of my front tires. I'd take two if you have them.  Let me know what you have.

Here are the scores from Sunday's event.  Sorry, I don't have the times from Saturday.

Technical Talk / Video Options
« on: April 25, 2016, 10:05:16 PM »
Just looking for some advice on where to spend my tax return on something that can record in car video.  Opinions are key.  I'd like to get a look at what I'm doing and I see lots of stuff stuck on cars or in cars.  What are the options?

Technical Talk / What Next: Tuning an old Volvo
« on: July 27, 2015, 12:46:35 PM »
Ok - looking for some sound council on the next steps I should take in developing my 1981 Volvo 242. I'm already in SM for silly reasons but wheeling the car around the cones is still a handful and while I'm pretty much the slowest guy out (and I'm not going to be fast anytime soon - I know I'm on a learning curve and a significant part of the issue) I'm working hard in the car - this doesn't feel like the Sunday drive my time are showing.

Things I've done since April:
Limited slip differential (new clutches and a full rebuild). Rear bushings, 2 sets of lower control arms to get 2.3 degrees of negative camber (fist set gave me 3.3 degrees negative and I lost front brake), now running zero toe. New rear shocks. New adjustable endlinks.

It already has an aftermarket anti roll bar, Wilwood brakes and a host of other mods.

My front tires have no shoulder from my initial efforts and are getting close to the wear indicators.

Things I think would be good ideas.

1. Stiffer springs - help stop the ship from rocking so much. Don't want to go nuts with rates as I don't want to exceed my Billy HD's valving. I haven't modelled the suspension to know where roll centres/couples/CG's are, but I should get on that.

2. Tires. This has to be worth some confidence at least. I can't hit things like sweepers fast as I'm grip limited. I can't back side a cone to save my life either, so keep that in mind.

I removed a big rear anti roll bar and am looking for a stock ARB as I had so much rear roll resistance that I was loosing grip. Volvo guys that run these things mostly remove the rear ARB (live rear axle BTW).

Or just give up for now, swap fronts for rears, drive it on the door handles and stop over-thinking it.

Technical Talk / What Class - Confused
« on: April 27, 2015, 08:40:14 AM »
Hello All,  I've been reading the SCCA rule book and I'm just unsure of what category I would fall into with my Volvo 242.  There are a few quirks about the car and I wasn't planning of doing solo with it when I was building the car (things happen).

The good:  Stock body, no mods.  No stock interior, but it's all bolted in properly (I'm an old guy with a beard driving a Volvo...go figure).

The history:  In 1981, Volvo introduced the 240 Turbo to the US market but Canada didn't get that car until 1982...we got the Euro Spec car with the 2.3 L high compression engine. So the rule book says I've got a turbo car...and if I was in the USA that would be true.

The Mods:  So I've swapped an engine into the car, but it's a different internal design (more modern, lower friction) but externally they look identical and it's the same displacement as the original.   It's a turbo charged engine running stock EFI (well, stock for a 1994 940) - It's got a slightly larger than stock turbo and I went and ceramic coated that along with ceramic coated exhaust manifold - but it all bolts up.  I'm running an incorrect IC, but it's a Volvo unit and it's sitting in the stock mounts...I'm sure no one cares.  I'm even using the stock 240 Turbo air box...bolts right up.

The ceramic coating puts me out of Street Touring and into Street Modified?

It's running a strut bar (from the factory it had some tower bracing, it's just got a cross brace - no one cares).  Slightly shorter springs all the way around.  Bilstein struts and Koni's in the rear (I'm sure that's fine).  Larger sway bars.  Wilwood racing brakes, rotors and hats - all four corners.

It will be getting a stock LSD unit of Volvo manufacture that was an original option on the car - this is a unicorn piece that I finally found.

Oh, and I'm running a Borg-Warner T5 transmission (approximately the same gear ratios).

What kind of mess am I in for just sticking a few letters beside my number to have some local fun.  I'm not looking to go and compete nation wide or anything foolish.

Help.

Member Introductions / Saying Hello - Craig
« on: April 21, 2015, 03:35:16 PM »
Well, I've just bought a membership and am going to join in the fun at the Ft. this weekend so I thought I should say hello.  The season sort of crept up on me and I've not had time to install a few needed parts in the car...motivation is good.

I've got two play cars.  The first is a 1981 Volvo 242 GLT.  I'm not sure what class I'm going to be in with this car or any of the details.  I'm looking forward to learning a lot.  I've built this car from the ground up (2010 - starting to rust again  :o).  Last year I installed the power train upgrade it's always needed.  It's now got a turbocharged 2.3 L engine and a Borg-Warner world class T5 getting it down the road.  It's also EFI now - which is super nice.  It's sporting a big brake kit (that actually has effect), sways, springs, bushings all the usual stuff that you never find in a Volvo.

The second car is much further off - it's a 1966 Volvo 122.  It's my latest zany project.  It's designed to go around corners with hate.  When done, it'll have a 2.3 L 5 cylinder, Toyota IRS and Corvette C4 IFS.  I've spent 2 years working on the engineering and some of the fabrication.  It's a long way back, so I won't bore you further.

Anyway - hope to have fun and meet the crowd on Saturday.
