The 'FAT KAT' Challenge event is open for registration.

http://msreg.com/2017FATKAT

R

Registration deadline for the 'FAT KAT" Challenge has been extended to Friday, Aug 11 at 8:00 pm.

This is likely the only Solo event you can participate in for significant prize money based on your own run index ability.
Everyone has an equal chance at the $$$. Don't miss the opportunity.

Also Note:
Saturday's prize money payout will be revised from 3 deep PAX finishers in the 4 groups, morning and afternoon, to a Random TEAM PAX winner and Random TEAM RAW winner payout, due to the lower entrant levels.

Fast or Slow... Everyone has a chance at the dough.

Understanding that some of you... OK, maybe a lot of you are unfamiliar with a challenge format, maybe bracket racing in general, I've prepared a fictitious 3 Group 16 car challenge ladder format. I used actual run times from the last YYC event and randomly selected qualifiers 1 - 16 in each run group. Their best scratch morning time was used for their round 1 index time, then effectively paxed against their opponent for that round only. Results attached...

RUN GROUP #1
Qualifier #1 ran consistent times, got lucky in the 3rd round when the opponent also coned their run away, got excited in the 4th round and as a result carries a breakout penalty index of 54.141 secs into the final 3 shoot out.
Qualifier #12 again shows that consistency matters, all the way to round 4 where they slowed down noticeably against Q1, likely due to competition 'jitters'.

RUN GROUP 2
Qualifier #11 shows a nice consistent 'leaking of sand from their pockets', showing a slight run time improvement in 1st, 3rd and 4th rounds. Always small enough improvement to not kill their chance of further improvement. Except maybe in the 4th round where the breakout results in an index of 60.877 secs into the final 3 shoot out.
Qualifier #12 shows the same minor 'sand leakage', in the first 2 rounds, but couldn't match Q11 4th round improvement.

RUN GROUP #3
Qualifier #10 shows that 'luck' plays a part of any challenge. Their 1st round opponent coned away what would have been a winning run, but not carrying a cone. And then in the 3rd round both competitors coned their runs, but Q10 prevailed on what would have been a breakout run. In the 4th round both competitors broke out again. Result Q10 carries a breakout penalty index of 58.449 secs into the final 3 shoot out.
Qualifier #11 again shows that if you can master 'sand leakage', you can move through the rounds quite effectively. But only until you meet another 'SAND MASTER'.

So, how did the Final 3 Shoot Out play out... Well you're all going to have to join us Aug 12/13 to turn this in REAL results.

Ryan has allowed me the pleasure of co-driving the car at all SCCA events this year.
The car is top tier competitive in BStreet, it has folks attention at a National level.
Even with my own meagre, inconsistent talent, I've been 4th and 3rd quickest BS at Crows and Packwood Tours respectively... OK, that was only day 2 at both events... need to work on stringing consecutive days together.

Where ever the car ends up, the new owner won't be disappointed.

Congratulations to our own Alan Rae, winning a close fought DM battle with the Babb's in his '91 Caterham.
Alan told me his secrets...
Bill over at Auto Mann did a little tune up on his Caterham recently.
Alan had his eyes tuned up as well, a little cataract surgery.
And he's found full throttle again.

Alan's looking forward to his annual pilgrimage to autox Mecca, Lincoln in September.
Trust we'll see him make an appearance at the Overtime 'FAT KAT' Challenge as well, tuning up for said pilgrimage.

The last Nationals appearance for the Vancouver Special was 2011, where Gary placed 1st in a 10 car AM field.

The 'Hot Rod' boys, Joe and Gary, have been plagued with mechanical / electrical issues since. Again last weekend in Packwood, electrical gremlins took them out of play on Gary's 1st run Saturday, resulting in no times for both drivers Saturday, but back in action Sunday completing 6 runs.

To date they are not registered for Nationals this year.

Well... one half of my weekend commitment was executed correctly.
Performed as 'tire warmer' extraordinaire, assisting Ryan on his 'quest for the best'.
Ryan's scratch last run would have pulled him to within 0.013 of Bullis.
The only closer battle was AS on Sunday.

As for myself... miss judged the Saturday course and was not able to recover in remaining 2 runs.
Happy with Sunday, 3rd quickest BS run, thanks to Ryan coning away his 3rd run :(, so I know that I can run with the pack. But... as the saying goes... One day does not an event make.

I'm a little disappointed that I'll be running the same heat as BS - really wanted to watch the Ryan vs Dan Bullis battle.  Two contenders for the top spot in Lincoln in my opinion.

I'll continue doing my best to provide Ryan optimally warmed tires in his quest for the best this year.

SASC Events / Re: Sound at SASC Events

The points I was trying to make...

- Sound disturbance / annoyance is very arbitrary.
- Squealing of tires, back firing, pop off valve release, boom box, car alarms going off, all can be considered a disturbance and annoying.
- Provincially, municipally there is no set standard, although 96 dB is referenced at times.
- Sound measurement is not an exacting standard, but doesn't need to be.
- SASC has adopted a procedure somewhat taken from SCCA, but it is not the gospel.
- Attempting to measure sound only at one type of load point, wide open 2nd gear (example), may miss the real annoyance factor of back fire or pop off valve release.

John Q Public does not give one hoot about dB readings, so called standards, etc. If he finds it annoying, he complains. If he complains, he's heard, and we lose. End of story.

Have you ever been to Crows Landing...

Packwood is down right urban.

As per Elimination Challenge Procedures:

Each competitor will be “dialed in” based on their best individual scratch qualifying time, not PAX time.  Any Competitor “breaking out” from this dial in time, will be assigned a new “dial in” time equal to 1.5 times the “break out” for the next round. Example: Dial In time 60.00 secs, Run time 59.00 secs, New Dial In time 58.50 secs.

So your example would play out like this...
Competitor 1 (being the faster of the 2 cars) would dial in (this round only) 59.000 (1.000 eff PAX)
Runs a 58.500 x 1.000 = 58.500 sec
Competitor 2 would dial in at (this round only) 61.000 (0.967 eff PAX)
Runs a 61.100 x 0.967 = 59.084 sec
Competitor 1 wins the round and advances... but due to break out his next dial in time is... 58.250
0.500 sec break out x 1.5 break out penalty = 0.750 sec penalty

Trust this helps

SASC Events / Sound at SASC Events

Here are the sound logs for anyone who is curious....

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B90EOLfq2VvgbVpVUkZZbk02MXM?usp=sharing

Far too many comments / complaints about sound yesterday at YYC.

The SASC number one challenge maintaining venues is sound complaints. Over the years Westerner NE lot, Grey Eagle, and Fort Macleod have been lost, or close to lost, all a result of sound complaints. So in 2016, as part of our campaign to secure Fort Macleod airport, the SASC implemented the current 93 dB sound limit.

Why 93 dB when SCCA events are 100 dB?
#1  We are not in the USA running on old military sites, where allowances for high sound limits are tolerated. Many regional and local SCCA events are faced with the same pressure on sound limits as we are, and have implemented lower sound limits to maintain venues.
#2  City of Calgary... Bylaws Related to Noise
"In Calgary, all residents have the right to not be disturbed by noise. Sound is restricted to certain levels during the daytime and at night.
Traffic or vehicle noise
A person shall not create or cause any loud and unnecessary noise from a vehicle or any part of a vehicle.
A motor vehicle must have an exhaust muffler that expels the exhaust gases without excessive noise.
A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle if the exhaust outlet has been widened.
A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle if a device is attached to the exhaust system or the muffler that increases the noise.
Any vehicle in motion emitting noise measured at 96 decibels or more by a sound pressure level meter is “objectionable noise” and is in contravention of the Traffic Bylaw.
At Council on  July 5, 2011 the Municipal Traffic Bylaw 26M96 was amended by Bylaw 41M2011 and the following point was added to the definition of “objectionable noise”:
Noise measured at 96 decibels (dBA) or more as measured by a sound pressure level meter at any point of reception. Where “Point of reception” means any location where sound levels are measured with a sound pressure level meter."
#3  Municipal District of Rocky View No. 44
"Section 14. No person who owns, operates or controls a vehicle shall allow the engine of the vehicle to be raced or otherwise operated so as to cause excessive and unnecessary Noise."
#4  How do we measure sound waves?
Sound energy travels in waves and is measured in frequency and amplitude.
The energy in a sound wave can be measured using Decibels.
Amplitude measures how forceful the wave is. It is measured in decibels or dBA of sound pressure. Normal speaking voices are around 65 dBA. A rock concert can be about 120 dBA.
Sounds that are 85 dBA or above can permanently damage your ears. The more sound pressure a sound has, the less time it takes to cause damage. For example, a sound at 85 dBA may take as long at 8 hours to cause permanent damage, while a sound at 100 dBA can start damaging hair cells after only 30 minutes of listening.
#5  We enjoy the use of venues at the pleasure of the owners. But they have no real stomach to deal with noise complaints from neighbours. Venue owners typical response is to tell us to leave. End of Story.

Some of you may feel noise goes hand in hand with performance. Nothing could be further from the truth. A quick look at the sound logs from yesterday show...
Top 10 PAX finishers; 8 of 10 entrants consistently were less than 89 dB.
Top 10 RAW finishers; 7 of 10 entrants consistently were less than 89 dB.

The SASC places the Sound Meter 50' from the course, set to "slow" response. The microphone will be 3 to 4 feet above ground, perpendicular to vehicle traffic, at a point where the vehicle can reasonably be expected to be under load at full throttle.

Sound Variance... "my vehicle has been to many events and never been over". Each course has it's own points of "full throttle under load". It's not exacting. But vehicle sound, under a given condition, throttle position and load is. And the sound meter measures this accurately.
Examples: (this is not to point fingers, but to show variance between drivers in the same vehicle)
#92    84 - 85 dB
#192  87 - 88 dB
Entrant #192 was the more aggressive, experienced driver ~6% quicker overall.
#52    90 - 92 dB
#529  92 - 94 dB
Entrant #529 was the more aggressive, experienced driver ~4% quicker overall.
#51    84 -89 dB
#151  82 - 85 dB
Entrant #51 was the more aggressive, experienced driver ~5% quicker overall.

I think you get the my point. A vehicle's sound can vary noticeably based on more aggressive driving. Whether that be your own driving, course dependent, or with someone else co-driving.

Also, entrants that bring vehicles knowing they can not or will not meet the sound limit must not be encouraged or tolerated. All that happens is the SASC will jeopardize the continued use of the venue.

The SASC must be diligent in the enforcement of Sound. Failure to do so does not bode well for Motorsports in general.
