Title: Ice Car
Post by: Terry Johns on March 07, 2017, 07:58:23 AM
Thinking of getting a winter Ice Car for next years events. A few questions:

1. Best car, value for money. Under 5k, WRX Wagon ???
2. What sort of tyres & studs are the most suitable ??
3. Do cars run in similar classes, eg: Street, or is a free for all ??

Thanks

Are you thinking about the Ice Dice series run by CSCC?  If so, here are the rules for this year's events, including classes and tires: https://cscc.speedracer.ca/forums/rallyx-news/2017-cscc-ice-dice-series/

Edmonton Rally club also runs rallycross events.  This is a quick summary of their classing rules: http://www.edmontonrallyclub.ca/new/?page_id=14

For Ice Dice, the classes are AWD, RWD and FWD, each one has studded and non studded class. Studded rules allow 3.5mm of protrusion for the studs. I ran Westlake SW606 with 3.5mm studs this year on a 1998 WRX STi Wagon and it proved to be a winning combination.

With respect to studded tires here's my guideline for stud length in for the 2017 series:

Thanks.

I couldn't see any reference to cars with mods, eg: suspension, tune, brakes.

I don't think there are any real regulations in that regard... at least not in the same way as solo 2.

I also ran westlake with 3.5mm studs for last three rounds.  A significant improvement for us over the Nokian Hakka 8's that i was using previously for both street and dice.

I learnt that FWD Studded is a tough class....

It was just a very fast and competitive class with experienced drivers.

The real message is, and I'm a complete convert, get a set of street winters and set of real good ice race tires with the 3.5mm studs.
