I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of such an event.  Wait for the schedule!

General Discussion / Re: Who's switching cars next year?
« on: February 12, 2017, 04:00:51 PM »
Talked to my salesguy. My car is still 12 weeks out roughly, production has not started yet. I won't be ready for the season at all so this year is basically a write off, probably won't prep the car but will try and get as much seat time as I can.

Now I just need to get by without a car for 12 weeks which is the hardest part.

Look for a beater civic or Integra to get you by, easily had for $1000 in running drivable condition.  Probably a bit crusty for that price but would be usable.

Or join the dark side with a $1000 focus :D

Technical Talk / Re: Tire Choices 2017

The costco tire pricing is crazy cheap.  A warning - if you are ordering a non-standard size for your vehicle or the tires you are buying are not of the same or higher load rating as what your car came with they won't do it.  The workaround is to bring the wheels in loose - when I spoke to them they said the rule was that they couldn't INSTALL tires that didn't meet these specs, and that technically meant mount on the vehicle.

I had to do that to get the RE-71Rs for my focus since 205/50R15 is not the same as 195/60R15 and the RE-71Rs were 1 lower on the load rating than the stock tires.

I just noticed that you were planning on only a few autocross events this year.  If so, then I think you could find something more suitable than the RE-71R.  They do wear out quickly, and they aren't exactly quiet (or soft) on the street.  You might prefer the RE760 or the Continental DW.

I also have RE-71Rs and drive them to/from Red Deer for events.  I'll echo this - they are not quiet or soft on the street. at. all.  I don't really like how quickly they seem to be wearing, they seem to wear off in chunks and quite a lot at a time.  Other tires have generally been smooth at the end of an overly aggressive run, the RE-71Rs seem to be grinding off big chunks and are all pebbled and uneven.  Maybe it's just my driving style but I feel like they are wearing out at an alarming rate compared to what I would expect on Rivals or RS3s.

Still holding out to see what the RS-4 brings and also keeping an eye on the Nexen Sura4G as they've done a bunch of testing with Heitkotter and Isley... seems like they put a bunch of work into this tire and it will be interesting to see what comes out of it.

There are RS4s coming?... I always liked my RS3s - I kept going back to them even when I was getting old stock just because I enjoyed them so much.  I hope the RS4 is more of the same but better!

General Discussion / Re: Racing Numbers Discount

I did these numbers via vistaprint. I've had no issues with them coming off at autox or lapping events.

Maybe this is a Porsche sheet metal vs 15 year old Subaru sheet metal problem... Like I said, when I buy a set they're who I plan on ordering from so it's nice to hear a positive review of them :)

Sorry to promote on your forum but I believe this means that the Westerner lot in Red Deer is allowed if somebody wanted to jump through all the insurance hoops

Yes they could ... just follow the steps, be licenced and bring insurance documents as per ASN requirements.  How does the Westerner feel about drones?  Do you know if they have any rules against them?

Also I suppose the City of Red Deer since they actually own the property and they might have some bylaws about where you can or can't fly a drone.

Reijo

Good questions - I'm hoping to meet with Kelly there in a couple weeks and I'll ask him then!

The vistaprint ones aren't super strong and if they are big enough or start to peel a bit they can fly off.  That said if I ever go through with getting a set made they were my top choice.

General Discussion / Re: Autocross -- the "cheap" motorsport
« on: January 11, 2017, 02:58:58 PM »

Adding this up, a year of competition costs me between $800 and $1600 depending on how much travelling I do and how hard I am on the tires.  2017 may be a bit more expensive but I might give up the planned car upgrades to keep the cost under control.

How many days of racing was this?  Instead of total cost, it would probably be best to estimate cost per person per day.

Jo and I race 40 to 60 days per year, so with two of us, our total cost isn't unexpected or unreasonable.

Good point.  Last year I managed to attend 14 events, the year before was similar.  I don't have a count for previous years but I would say between 9 and 18 events a year.

Ha,so Tom by my reckoning I owe you $33.00. P.

And by that reasoning, it gets cheaper if you drive faster!

Those numbers can be pretty intimidating for somebody trying to get into the sport.  I'd like to speak a bit about my financial adventure in the world of autocross.

I compete in a car that I paid $1040 for 3 years ago, and before that I was racing a $700 RX-7 that I bought in 2011.  In both cases I had to put a few hundred in parts into the cars to make them safe for competition before I could run them but total investment in each car was well under $1500.  I do all my own work so labour costs are not a problem and I find working on cars to be relaxing (generally).

I usually set aside $500 for car repairs/upgrades each year.    Typically this gets me something like wheel bearings and bushings, camber plates, or (maybe next year) adjustable control arms.  With such a small budget this means that I must try to work on perfecting my control of the car I have rather than making radical changes each year.

I also usually spend about $500/year on tires.  Looking back the receipts I can find look like this: (those 2012 RS3s really did last me until partway through 2014)
2011 - Sumitomo all-seasons: $190
2012 - RS3s: $480
2014 - 4 BF Goodrich Rivals: $450
2015 - 2 RS3s for the front $360
2016 - 2 RS3s for the front again: $320
2017 - 4 Bridgestone RE-71Rs: $560

I then budget around $500 for fuel and entry fees.  I leverage volunteering with the CSCC to help reduce the cost of the events and the focus is pretty economical, only using about 35-40L to drive round-trip to Red Deer and compete in an event.  For 2017 I am increasing this part of the budget so I can attend some Fort Macleod and YYC events but I am hoping to stay under $1000.

Adding this up, a year of competition costs me between $800 and $1600 depending on how much travelling I do and how hard I am on the tires.  2017 may be a bit more expensive but I might give up the planned car upgrades to keep the cost under control.

One final thing: I almost didn't post this because I don't want to come off as being smug.  This isn't meant to be a "hey, I have just as much fun as you do for less money" post, what I want to do is encourage people to come out and enjoy themselves!

I'm not switching cars but I am switching classes.  I'm moving my Focus to STF so that I can use the new wheels I picked up and maybe finally put those poly bushings in the front end that I have always wanted to do.  I should probably invest in new shocks/springs so I can get rid of the stock ones but at over $1000/set I doubt I am going to have the money for that next year given I blew the tire budget by $600 this past year...

To be honest I'm surprised they continued to offer that hosting for as long as they did!

Thanks again for your hard work over the years!

Do you have a new location set up for distributing mjtiming as well?

The "conventional" wisdom with winter tires is even on a FWD to put the grippiest tires on the rear because if you have the back end with less grip it can swing around when braking.

Can't say I have ever experienced that but I have been told it by a lot of people.

So they are bragging about getting kicked out, in many places show their license plates then go to an easily identifiable public place to drive like hooligans and post it on youtube?

I have a guess from reading the results but could somebody please PM me the names of these people?
