General Discussion / Re: 2016 Autocross Season Saturday Test & Tunes

I think that's something that could be pretty fun... with mandatory ride alongs.  :)

Oooh -- now there is an awesome idea.  Mandatory ride alongs would be equally good for the experienced people; I need to learn how to do better when I have that extra weight in the car.

I would probably suck at being in a team event, I tend to screw up when I get under pressure and last thing I want is to drag other people down with me.

That's the whole point of team events -- add more pressure without losing the fun factor.  And you will never get better under pressure until you have some practise :)

Oops -- changed my vote to standalone.

I would also suggest that we set up a team event or two.  We can do this in parallel with a championship event (score it both as individual scores as well as team events).  If we enforce some mix and match to prevent "cheater teams", I think it could be fun.

2 day championship weekends do cause problems for those people that can only make it to a single event.

Why not just make each day a championship event?  If you look at the overall score statistics (http://members.shaw.ca/murray.autocross/2015/_overalls.txt), only 13 people made it out to the required 7 Sunday events.  If we make every day a championship day (but still require only 7 for the championship), we should get more people in the fight.

Looking forward to seeing you at an event.

Also - don't forget events south of the border (Packwood, Montana, and Idaho).

General Discussion / Re: Brakes brakes brakes

Street class allows you to change fluid and pads only -- rotors and calipers are right out.

Try flushing your fluid -- DOT 3 is just fine for autox -- DOT 4 is a waste of money.

Pads are a personal sort of question; preference guides you here.  I run aftermarket pads, but pretty simple ones (ceramic).  HP does all sorts of brake pads, but most of them are suited for track applications.  Try something milder for autox.  You want lots of bite on first application, but super high temps are a waste of money.

Automotive Marketplace / Re: ISO: Tire trailer
« on: October 15, 2015, 07:45:17 PM »
I am in the process of tearing our trailer down and turning it into a small carge hauler.

You have 2 basic paths you can choose, both of them starting with a small utility trailer (we imported on from Harbor Freight in the U.S.  Much RIV hassle :( ).

1. Tires bolted down in 2 stacks, with a tool box bolted onto the other half of the bed.
2. Tires up front and a box built for holding tools, jack, etc.

Either choice is easy; the biggest hassle is getting the trailer of your choice.

I had hoped you would have better weather.

Congrats on your 2nd place PAX finish!

Great Falls had an event this last Sunday, so Jo and I decided to extend our season by one more week and attend.  Windy.  Very, very windy.  Cones doubled up and timing lights strapped down to wheels to keep them from blowing away.

I still got in 8 runs (Jo went to the pub after 4 runs), and I managed a 1st PAX, even with passengers on all my runs.

I believe Wayne went to Helena.  I'll let him chime in on the wind situation down there.

No scores for Saturday -- it was too miserable for anyone to do marshaling.

James C. provided us with a convincing demonstration on how to do it properly :)  Nice driving James!

That is almost certainly the inner CV joint bearing surface getting rough.  Here is a cheap fix: http://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/241367-axle-bucket-inner-cv-joint-swap-diy-with-pics/

I have a socket for the read axle nut if you want to borrow it.

Tose aftermarket half shafts I used still had some vibration under acceleration.  When I went back to OEM, the vibration disappeared.
