Snell 2005 helmets not allowed next year?
« on: November 20, 2015, 03:40:10 PM »
Saw this in the Winnipeg forum (http://forums.wscc.mb.ca/index.php?/topic/9886-new-helmet-rules-please-read/page-2#entry119110)

Quote
News from the AGM. Apparently 2005 helmets are no longer valid as of now. I believe ice racers are getting rid of all their 2005 helmets immediately. For all us summer racers, now would be a good time to start looking to buy a new one.

Anyone have confirmation from WCMA about this?  Nothing on their website.

The ASN rules, effective June 13, 2015, are as below with the red portion being new updates at the time.

4.5.2 Acceptable helmets:
• FIA 8860-2004
• FIA 8860-2010
• FIA 8859-2015
• Snell 2015 SA, or 2015 M

• Snell 2010 SA, 2010 SAH, or 2010 M
• Snell 2005 SA, or 2005 M (expiry 31.12.2018)
• SFI Foundation 31.1/2015
• SFI Foundation 31.1/2010
• SFI Foundation 31.1/2005 (expiry 31.12.2018)

• SFI Foundation 31.1A or 31.2A (expiry 31.12, 2015)

Edit- maybe there are some updates, but it seems odd for them to contradict such a recent change

Normally they go back 2 versions ... so 2005 should still be ok.

Since Jo and I are planning on a cross-Canada trip next year, I sure hope this gets clarified ASAP.

For most of the past (except the last 5 years or so), we've been the same as SCCA with the helmet rules ... not sure what happened in the recent past that left us out of step with the SCCA????   Weird.

Maybe this is something that should be corrected?   e.g. that it was a mistake essentially?

I'm wondering what AGM they were referring to this coming from, that might clarify what's going on.

I just received a confirmation that the list I posted above is correct, as our regulations reference FIA List 25.

Just to clarify... SNELL 2005 helmets are good until 2018 then?

I'm trying to find out from the Winnipeg poster about where the information came from, but my confirmation was from the WCMA VP as well as directly from the current FIA documentation.

As a follow up, the FIA list now shows M rated helmets expiring at the end of 2016 (both M2005 and M2010)  This was updated on December 31st.  Not sure if ASN will also follow this but it is worth keeping in mind if you are going to buy a new helmet.  SA hemets are showing the following expiries:
SA2005 31.12.2018
SA2010 31.12.2023
SA2015 31.12.2023

Could you please post a link to this FIA list?

Thanks.

So, this late change means a lot of people have spent money on helmets that need to be tossed at the end of this year.  Can one register some sort of complaint somewhere?  This is pretty lousy (and arbitrary) management.

I wouldn't say that yet, as ASN Canada still has to decide on their requirments.  For the last few years they followed the FIA list but that does not mean it will always be followed 100%.  I suppose contacting ASN Canada with your concerns may be the best path if you want to have your voice heard.

As for it being arbitrary, I doubt that an organization like FIA would be making this type of decision in that manner.  They have a lot of time and money available to dig deep into issues, especially when they relate to safety.

So just to clarify, my M2005 helmet is good for the remainder of 2016 and then its garbage?
