Title: New Tyres
Post by: Terry Johns on June 11, 2015, 06:47:54 AM
The new 2015 SCCA tire regulations for stock classes sound absolutely absurd, 200 ware rate, that makes by brand new bone stock MX5 illegal in stock, go figure  >:(

The OEM tires are Potenza RE050A?  IMO, you are fine to run them at club events (not regionals or Nationals).  Tire manufacturers aren't allowed to mark a tire with a higher tread wear rating than measured, but they are free to go as low as they want.  The Potenza are one of those tires with a tread wear rating that is very low for marketing reasons.

ASN Canada has extended the 140 treadwear rule for the 2015 season (Toyo, who is the national sponsor needed more time to fully roll out their rebranded tires)  One thing you will find is that the new generation of 200 treadwear tires will stick far better than the RE050A's (Dunlop Direzza II Star Spec, Bridgestone RE-71R, BFGoodrich Rival)

Thanks Stuart -- I had forgotten about the ASN Canada extension.  Which means the tires are legal for regionals and Nationals as well.

I have the same issue with my OEM tires on the Fiesta, same as yours I believe. I had them out at the school, and they certainly didn't feel as sticky as my 200 wear rated RE71's. That said, I don't recall having any issues with lack of grip.

They held up very well with not much wear too. It was only on the second day in the afternoon when we ran 7 runs (I think) back to back when they heated up too much. Good tires overall, I like the Re71's, but these are way more cost effective and versatile.

Toyo R1R 200 TW tread pattern is the same as the 140 TW version. So is the rubber compound, I suspect.
