I'm hoping to have this on this coming Sunday, Dec. 18, 2016.
Today there was 8" of ice on Ghost Lake so I will continue to monitor the thickness to make sure we are ok. We need 11" of blue ice for a 3/4 ton truck.
Bring small cars? ;)
If there is insufficient ice, then we will re-schedule. However Tom G. will be contacting everyone and arranging instructor days etc. very soon.

If Dec 18th is still too far away, fear not, Forza Horizon 3(XBOX) has just released their 1st expansion pack "Blizzard Mountain" complete with yes, a frozen lake 8) and it feels pretty darn good for a video game. Hot tip, the snowy terrain and frozen lake go very well with the Bentley Continental ;)

This thread is a call for volunteers, for those that have helped us out in the past I most likely already have your email address and will be sending you an email shortly to see your availability for the season. If you haven't received an email from me by end of day today please post in this thread and/or PM me.
This post is to see if there are any other new folks that would like to help out with the schools. We're looking for folks to help set up/take down courses, guide the students between the exercises, and for those that are experienced and willing, to instruct. Lunch is provided for the volunteers as well as a gas card to help offset some of the costs of going to/from Ghost Lake. But most importantly it's a great way of giving back to the community and having fun in the process.

I would like to volunteer on one of the weekends please. Ideally end of Jan or beginning of Feb.
-
Note the Jan. 28 is a BMW club member only event but we need some volunteers to help instructing. They will provide some instructors.
-
I would also like to help out at as many events as I can this year!

I got your PM Jordan and Reijo sent me your email, I'll be reaching out to you shortly.

I would like to encourage all club members to come out and help out even if only for a couple of days. There is some orientation req'd (hence a couple days) and we set up multiple "stations" with exercises unique to the winter schools which are very different than the summer solo schools and even a long road course for the end of the day which puts together the learnings of the day. We do have quite a bit of fun and you can do some lapping at the end of the day as a bonus .. we encourage taking students with you if they wish to.
The unique "stuff" includes spins (yep, 360's and how to control them in the middle of them, collision avoidance, a big,....really big G circle (2 of them), mini slalom course and a bigger lapping course (longest one I set up was over 4 km. long ... provides large spaces between cars). Some of the most fun I have had in cars has been out on the lake. Best part? Seeing the transformation in people's driving ... the "aha" moments. PLUS you will probably learn something too since everything happens in slow motion so it gives you time to analyse what the car is doing but perhaps more importantly; what you are doing. The skills absolutely transfer over to summer competition, btw. So come on out. We can all learn something and be of service to the community as a whole!
-
If you (club members ... consider this a benefit of being a member) can only make it out for part of a day, by all means, we'll have someone give you a "tour" .... Just make sure you sign the waiver which I will likely have a copy of in my vehicle typically. Come out and see what we are doing and that way you can intelligently spread the word.

What's the word on ice thickness and are we having an instructors school tomorrow?
-
Going out there later today ... look for info here and FB.
We'll also do a head count to see who can make it ... get back to Tom today ...
-
May even do a mini-training session if there are not too many ... or maybe even a 1/2 day???? We'll see. Stay tuned.9
-
BTW, there was 11" of ice on Tuesday ... enough for 3/4 ton ... drove my T100 on the ice ... about 4000lbs plus ... see FB photos.

Tomorrow's forecast is for warmer weather too, close to 0C

Guess you have not been around lately ... last couple of years on south side and west of island. We will not use the north side.....complaints about noise.
Just follow from Day's Inn.

I have been out the past 4-5 years, just confirming we are still using the same area :) see you all in the morning.

Posted some photos from this afternoon from Ghost Lake ... 15-17" of ice measured by others near the island.
White-out conditions early in the afternoon and a couple of got stuck because not see the new and large drifts that formed since yesterday .... Can you say strong west winds? Chinook winds? :)
Later on near the landing and big crack it was ok - see photos on SASC FB page.

and to make up for it - I could come help set up the night before or 6am and get updated on anything new, or to learn any conventions in teaching you want us to follow.. if that helps!

The instructors session was mostly canceled, Im not sure how many actually went to Ghost Lake but Reijo sent an email that morning saying it was canceled so I stayed home. Not sure if we will have another shot at doing the instructors school before the first student session.

Any chance of having a brief instructors school before the 1st wave of students on the 31st? Finally got a fresh pair of studded tires on the front, tho Im back to possible snap oversteer since the rear tires have lost most of the studs or they are worn flat. I might just goto Ghost Lake tomorrow by myself and get a better feel for this Accord on ice with its current setup.
