Title: Fontana Pro Solo - Friday - Sunday
Post by: Reijo on March 29, 2017, 03:47:36 PM
Fontana is at the Autoclub (former) super speedway in the SW corner of the property in the green lot.  This is a large lot where the LA region has most of their regular solo events (looks like El Toro is done now ... development has encroached on the old AFB unfortunately).

Article:
http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/event.status/uidEvent/F9DAA24E-BE2E-9FDD-A93D9BE5A0A2974E

233 entries right now and a few from here are running:

Jay - SS,
Orieta - L2
Ryan C/Wayne D. - BStreet

Practice starts will be on Friday and competition on Sat/Sun.

Live timing/scoring and link to streaming video will be here (when they go live on Saturday morning):

Good luck guys and gal!

First group (all the ladies' classes!   Just remembered they decided to put all the ladies in a single run goup(s) ... well, together....great idea.  Those ladies in the Pros really have a great competition ... really tight racing ... ).   Orieta is running in L2 ... so right now.

In the next group we have BS with Wayne and Ryan ... think Jay runs in the 3rd (of 4) groups in the 6th heat in SS.

Times are being posted on sololive right now .... 1st group of ladies and junior karts are running.

Orieta coned both her runs on one side ... but she has another 4 runs to get it together this afternoon and tomorrow morning.

Ryan is running now ... very fast time on one side and RL (red light) on the other .... looking good!  Wayne will be up soon.

update:  Ryan's 2nd run after the RL is really slow .... about 8 seconds too slow ... must've spun the car.   Well, 2 more sets to come!

I notice Navid Khangi is in a Ford Focus RS and is essentially matching Ryan's times ... but he RL both runs on the same side as Ryan RL'd and spun ... They are 1/10th apart .. so looking to be a good battle there ... interesting ... Cayman S vs. Focus RS.    :)

Wayne is running now in Ryan's Cayman S .... Jay be coming up in a while after that ... say maybe an hour or less....

Ryan's slow time is wrong -- he's getting a rerun.
Title: Re: Fontana Pro Solo - Friday - Sunday
Post by: Reijo on April 01, 2017, 11:38:07 AM
That's odd ... Ryan's 37 sec. slow time has disappeared from the scoring .... wonder if it was a red-flagged run or incorrect timing and he is going to get a re-run later?   hmmm.....

And Wayne just jumped up to 5th (trophies to 4th) on his 3rd run of the morning!   One more run to go ... good job.  However Navid and Ryan are the fastest guys ... 0.0.21 sec. apart in the 29's (only ones in the 29's in the class) but both do not have a good run on the one side ... which seems to be a troublesome side for some reason.

Wayne finished his morning runs and is 0.006 sec. out of the last trophy place (4th).

When Ryan gets his re-run and if he gets a good run, I think he should be able to get into the lead ... at the looks of it.

There we go!

Ryan pulls off a good run and he has a 1.0+ second lead over Kyle Williams (FRC 'vette).  However I'm sure Navid will clean up his act and jump right alongside Ryan in the next set of runs!

Ugh, Jay RL'd both right side runs but ran the fastest time in the left course!  Charles Kim is fast ... in the same type/year of car and was just a little bit slower than Jay on that side ... There are two more sessions to clean up his act so I'd say looking good.  Of course, the others will continue to get faster also.

Heitkotter (STU) on his first run has the fastest left side run .... on his Nexens ....

Bryan's first run on the right side, is the the fastest run on the right side and he is in the lead in STU by about 3/4 of a second ...

JB's are out again .... start of 2nd runs ... about 2 pm pacific time .... rather late ... going to be along day for them out at Fontana,   There seemed to be delays due to timing I'm guessing.  The Pro Solo timing system just isn't very stable ... lots of crashes.

Jay finally got a clean run on the right side which put him into 3rd place (only 2 trophies)....1 sec out of 2nd and 2 sec behind Scott Fraser who is leading .... only GT3's in the SS class this time around ... 6 entries.

It is a *huge* project.  The hardware could probably be designed and built in 3 or 4 months, but it requires special software, and that could take years.  I am not sure I want to take on something that large.

Cool!  Orieta is in the first run group in L2 ... too bad no audio ... I hope they have it at Crow's Landing and other future events ...   The announcers often convey some pertinent info.  Ryan should do well and then there is the Challenge rounds in the afternoon!

Ryan won BS ... with Alex Muresan 0.3 sec. back of him.  Alex is from SoCal and always fast and pulled out a couple of quick runs on his very last two passes!  hahaha ... talk about leaving it to the last moment, eh?  hehe

Wayne improved a little bit on one side and then RL'd his last two passes .... and ended up in 8th place.  There were quite a few fast drivers in there ... following Alex was Kyle Williams who has come a long ways from when I lived in SoCal in 3rd place and I would say he is nationally competitive as well as Navid in the Focus RS in the final and 4th trophy spot.

So a big congrats to Ryan for bringing home a 1st place trophy!

In L1, Christine Grice (nee Berry ... Tom Berry's eldest daughter and married to Marshall Grice), pretty much dominated the field.  Christine is a multi-time National Champion (there are quite a few down in SoCal and that area).

However, of note, Kencey Christopher is in 2nd place in an A-Mod ...

Kencey is driving her father's car; the same car Marshall Grice is driving (over the  last couple of years) and Marshall won A-Mod at Nats with that car in 2016.

It is also the A-Mod I drove to 3rd place at the 2008 Nats at Topeka.  However the car is completely different now than it was when I drove it ... much larger/better wings, a completely different motor (supercharged and turb'd I think, big bore, 4-cycle engine from a motorcycle (Kawasaki I think?) that was putting out about 280 hp the last I heard.  That does not sound like a lot but when you consider the car + driver have to weigh a minimum of 900 lbs, that is about 3 lbs/hp.

Kencey came up through the Junior A /Junior B ranks in autox in SoCal.  She started racing a kart when I was down there ... about 2006 or 2007.  Just last year she graduated to full-sized "cars" ... if you can call that A-Mod/Acme Special, a car!   :)  Anyway, she seems to be doing well.  I think she may not have a full driver's licence yet .... learner's I think.

Trivia for the day.   :)

In CS, the top 3 spots are 2016 MX5's ... and the field is mostly made up of them.

Paul Brown led most of yesterday in ES but again, someone (Valafar) came in with a couple of hot last runs (very last two) and took the lead away by 0.3 sec.

Makes me think the track is getting faster (rubber/clean) and/or people are dialing themselves and their cars in a bit for the surface.

In DS, Mark Scroggs is killing them with his 4cyl. 2016 Camaro 1LE ... go figure, eh?  I was reading up on that car recently and it is very competitive ... turbo 4 with pretty good power and torque ... decent suspension, manual, big tires/wheels .... What' not to like, eh?  I think I recall something like 0-60 in about 6 sec. ... old muscle car territory.

And it is a 4 cylinder ... Did I say that already?

With a lighter engine, the overall weight is down and needless to say the balance is improved.

Hmmm..... Kinch Reindl appears to have been DSQ'd in STS in his '88 CRX ..... perhaps something illegal on the car?  And Pete Loney has jumped into 2nd place behind Stephen Yeoh .... both LA guys.

Update:  Just today's runs were DSQ'd .... Kinch was in 2nd after yesterday but now Pete has displaced him to 3rd.

STR is a huge battle ground ...  James Yom (won STR the last couple of years at Nats) just took over the lead from Ken Motonishi (multi-time national champion) by 0.047 seconds!  The top 5 positions are 0.5 sec. apart ... and Kevin Dietz is just making his last runs trying to catch up ...

Notably Ron Bauer has jumped up into 3rd place about 0.2 sec behind the leaders ... in his 2016 MX5.

I get a real laugh out of Scott McHugh ... who has been known for racing Corvettes typically.  However he is running his grocery-getter '13 Honda Accord in HS ... is in the top 10 in PAX, and has won HS ... ha haha.  He is a multi-time National Champion of course but he sure is driving the wheels off that grocery-getter!   :)

Congrats to Jay!  2nd place behind Scott Fraser (multi-time National Champion) ... by about a second.  Charles Kim did not manage much better and his wife/gf Jocelin even "skirted" him!   And Charles is not a bad driver .. .think he has trophied at Nats ... but Jocelin has won the ladies class in that car ... a couple of years ago.  So, she is fast!

In the R1 class Marshall Grice ran the Christopher's A-Mod and did some absolutely blistering runs!   22/23 seconds .... TOP PAX of the day ... That is an amazing achievement in A-Mod where the tiniest errors can result in lost time at the speeds they carry. ... GT3's were running high 26 and low 27's (Scott Fraser) ...

Think about it ... that is about 30% faster than SS ...

Wow 2.0L Camaro. All driver or partial car too?

Driver is very good ... but the car is definitely competitive.

There are quite a few top PAX drivers in the mix .... without a damned good car there is no way he'd be that high on PAX at that event.

For instance take a look at James Yom who won STR ... his reaction times are amazing ... all in the 0.5's except one 0.601 and one 0.603 ... Ken M, Tom Berry and probably a couple dozen past National Champions etc. ... You aren't going to outdrive all of those guys ... and definitely not without a good car.

Of course there is always the course factor .... Some courses may favour some cars ... and I noticed in the video I watched that there were some almost button hook turns in there which is unusual for down there ... but the Green lot is smaller than El Toro where they have run in the past.

4. Sammy Valafar over Jim Harnish
...
uh, oh ... Ryan just got a cone on the rt. side.... :(

He just did a 0.595 (?) light on the left but lost to Michael Parker by virtue of the cone on the rt. side ... too much to overcome a 2 second penalty.

3. Paul over Michael (Paul is in a kart!  Shifter 125)
4. Anthony over Scott's red light (Damn, I was hoping Scott would bring that grocery-getter Accord home for the win! hahaha ... but his driving let us down ... not the car!  :)  )

End of 3rd round ... now for the quarter finals!    1-4th places to be determined now!

I see they made a mistake saying Monty was in 2nd in SS ... meanwhile Jocelin Huang and Jay leap-frogged Monty on Sunday morning and Jay jumped ahead of Jocelin on Sunday after she had improved and been in 2nd for a while.  She has won nationals before ... couple of years ago I wrote an article on her and Charles for Sportscar Magazine at the Solo Nationals ... They were both quite fast from what I remember so Jay did good beating them!

Here's Bryan Heitkotter's (Nissan 350Z in STU) best runs from Fontana and his commentary from FB:

"Joining the Fontana ProSolo video party late...

When I watched my fastest right-side run today, I couldn't help noticing how boring it looked. In general, from inside the car most of the runs felt faster than they looked later on video. I guess it's true - smooth is fast.* Or perhaps the Nexen SUR4G gives me feedback that it has small slip angle before I have to actually correct the car most of the time. I remember feeling like I had a lot of grip in most places, even though the video doesn't convey that sensation. The high grip concrete at Crows Landing should be fun!

Best run each side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpJDGjM0YcU

Interestingly enough my fastest runs were done back to back and both had sleepy lights (0.67x).

*Provided it's just smooth enough but still on point.

Kudos to Jonathan Lugod on the course design. Several different challenges were stuffed into a small space without it feeling overly busy or claustrophobic. My favorite part was the banked turn on the left course and the run down to the turnaround."
