Title: Crow's Landing Pro Solo - Apirl 21-23
Post by: Reijo on April 22, 2017, 01:21:20 AM
Article from SCCA (Ryan Clark is mentioned in there as a favourite for winning BS ... and Wayne is co-driving).  Ambrose Fung from here and Jay with Orieta are in SS as well.  Orieta is in L2 (ladies 2 class).

Test starts and a test 'n tune course was held Friday with the actual competition beginning like normal on Saturday morning:

https://www.scca.com/articles/2006014-2017-tire-rack-crows-landing-prosolo-tune-in

You can follow along for live results here (Sololive) like usual:

http://sololive.scca.com/

Also at the link above is the run order.  L2 runs first (Orieta), SS runs in the 2nd group and BS in Group 4.

There will be some incredible battles there .... especially STR!

Yes, Ryan was in 2nd by something like 0.07x sec. after Saturday but pulled it out on Sunday - good driving and congratulations!

Lots of tough competition down there!

Ryan has run well both Pro weekends.
Very adept at pushing a new car, untested, to the limits immediately. Aggressive would be appropriate.

On a side note...
I'm now know as Sunday's 'Red Light King'.
2 at Fontana... 3 at Crows.

Here's some live streaming video from Sunday morning that Ryan Otis (CAM - Camaro, from Portland) did at Crow's ... subscribe for future video.

Also, I thought it was very good video - very smooth driving technique etc. early turning of the steering wheel, back side of cones, smooth on the throttle ... and notice he sandbagged the last two runs?  He had enough lead that he didn't have to go faster.

Then Dennis Healey (another Cdn. from So. Ontario but living in Portland for maybe the last decade or so), drives Ryan's Camaro.  Dennis destroyed the diff mounts leading to the driveshaft failure in his Mustang.  Ryan allowed Dennis to take his last runs in the Camaro.

The video also captures the "essence" of Pro Solo I thought ... and hectic action ... change-over, tire pressures on the fly (it has to happen very fast as you can see), and the action.

There is even a quick shot I notice of Ryan Clarks' Silver Cayman in the background but he was on the other side running against Alex Muresan's silver Honda S2000 that you see directly behind Dennis Healey.

If you listen to the announcing by Kevin Dietz, you'll hear commentary on the event and other runs including Ryan Clark's ...

I really, really, really hate helmet mounted cams -- makes me seasick and doesn't give me nearly as good a feel for the driving.

Yes, I noticed that disorienting feeling as well.

Here's Ryan's best right side car from a solid-mounted camera (including SoloStorm data), even with this camera it looks like the car is "swimming" around quite a bit ... Camaro?:

Best left side (he did not load up one of his left sides but it is his wife Lacey):

I think the swimming effect is the result of the camera's motion stabilization hardware/software.

Hmmm.....looked at it again.   It is definitely a strange effect and I don't think it can be the car.  The Camaro is a bit of a boat but not THAT much.  It seems to go in and out a bit too ... think it was one of those vibe cameras ... not a GoPro.  My GoPros never do anything like that.  Weird.

Here is an extreme case: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZP-kcebgpXY&feature=youtu.be

If you have image stabilization on your camera, you should turn it off for autocross :)
