Driving Discussion / Re: New Car: Suggestions?

Yeah maybe this will come down to doing a back to back test drive in the end.

I've had my heart set on the M2 for a very long time, but it is hard to ignore the price difference given that I like both quite a lot. The Type R just seems like a bargain in comparison and more practical as a DD. I think my main concern with the Type R is if it would actually be boring to drive as a DD.

For the 2019 model of the Honda they fixed up the infotainment system; most of the reviews I have seen have people complaining about how they adjust the climate control every time they want to turn the volume up or down. This years model apparently has a dedicated volume knob and everything now, haha.

Awesome, I knew I could count on you guys for a quick run down on them!

Paul, maybe next summer if everything works out I will be around in the summer with a new toy! Haha. Fingers crossed.

James, any reason you'd avoid the Type R. I know the styling is polarizing, but I kind of dig it

Driving Discussion / New Car: Suggestions?

Yo! How is my favorite club doing these days!   ;D

I was hoping to get some opinions on a new car, I am looking at picking up something fun for next spring. The two I was debating between were the BMW M2 Competition (w/ manual) and the Civic Type R.

Just wondering which one you guys think is generally more competitive for AutoX (assuming they are both on the same brand of tires).

General Discussion / Re: Driving shoes - learn me

Some of the sporting and shoe shops have "driving" shoes.  Usually around $100-120 that have a nice thin sole that gives you good feel.  I think that is the secret - look for a thin sole but also a relatively snug/tight fit so they do not shift around on your foot.

I see Sport Cheq has some Pilotis too ... go figure.  I think I bought a pair years ago at Forzanis (?) at Chinook Mall - upper level on the east side ... north of the food court ... whatever shoe store that was.

All this time I thought the only criteria was that they were red for good luck! haha

I've seen some Ferrari shoes at stores once in a while, they are not nearly as expensive as I though they would be. Even on the site they are only $185 CAD. I have seen them for sale for a lot less.

Pulling this ad

Putting brand new tires on it, and the fuel economy has been a god send this year. Might as well keep it for a while longer!

Pretty interesting event, I was following it closely on my phone live as it all played out, haha. Really loving that live scoring, such a great thing to have for these events!

I think the Rivals are the tire of choice for most at nationals from what I remember.
I am not really sure which is best, I think I'd need to see some more evidence before I jump off the Bridgestone wagon. The RE-71R's are only available in 205's, while the Rivals come in 215. I think that is why people are buying them over the RE-71R's for this car. I still kind of feel like the Bridgestones are a better compound.

At the Canadian Nationals this summer, the H-Stock champion from 2016 came out with his Fiesta ST equipped with Rivals. He also had a rear sway bar, and he had done the front Koni shocks. I was eager to see how the cars would stack up against one another with these slight differences. Time wise, I ended up ahead of him by 6.63 seconds over 4 runs, although it is pretty hard to quantify exactly why.

In the end I am still left wondering which tire is a better option. I might pick up a set of Rivals as my second set for next year (if I decide to keep my car that is) and then I can run them back to back with the Bridgestones and see how they feel.

Interesting, none of the Fiesta ST's are running Bridgestones, they are all on BFGoodRich. Also an Accord on Nexen tires is leading H-Stock, kudos to him!

Hey Murray, have you ever considered using a setup where the beam emitter and sensor are on the same side and just a reflector/mirror is on the opposite end? That could help minimize strikes on the equipment by putting the reflector on the more risky side.

That was one of the things I tried back when I was designing prototypes.  I never was able to achieve a satisfactory range.  And, of course, you just know that a car is going to defy your expectations and hit both emitter and sensor.

haha this is true, I guess if we knew where the car was going to spin out we wouldn't have an issue with people hitting them in the first place!

I was wondering if that would be an issue actually. I know your beam has a pretty wide spread, makes it easy to line up, but I suppose when you are doubling the travel distance with something like a reflector it just becomes too weak. Is there a more focused beam emitter that might work for that application? I guess the follow up is; does it cost more? Yes, haha.

Great job gents!

Is there an overall pax results anywhere btw? I was kind of curious to see how things shook out overall.

General Discussion / Re: Tent/Canopy?
« on: July 06, 2017, 09:22:10 AM »
Me and Dan went in together on a canopy at FM a couple of times before giving up on the idea. We used a standard one initially, weighted each leg with a tire. It ended up getting so twisted up it fatigued the leg connection at the canopy top and clean broke off. After that we tried a heavy duty one, and we also braced it with straps, but it ultimately suffered the same fate by the end of a 2 day weekend.

The one that Shane posted looks interesting, kind of looks like it would put up more more abuse from the wind than the 4 post versions.

Yeah Cam and Ryan both were smoking through the course all weekend, really impressive!

I had a lot of fun at the event, it was really nice to see everybody from Calgary down there!

I remember you guys were talking about Bob Bundy at the school, and he was there!

Granted they did more runs in the afternoon on the same course and he kicked my butt in the afternoon, haha
