Automotive Marketplace / WTB: 16inch alloy wheels
« on: October 03, 2017, 08:30:30 PM »
Hey all, I am looking for some winter wheels for my Mazda 3, doesn't need to be fancy but must NOT be steelies.  My preference is 16x7 but willing to consider 16x6.5 too.

Here are the specs I need:
-5x114.3 bolt pattern
-Hub Center bore size MUST be 67.1mm
-16x7 or 16x6.5 rim size
-offset +40 to +50
-It CANNOT be hot pink lol

Ideally looking for something cheap, previous gen Mazda 3 wheels go for about $200-$300 on kijiji and that is my contingency plan.  Thought I would try the club first tho before I jump on anything from kijiji.

Technical Talk / Tires/Setup Questions
« on: August 14, 2017, 03:32:01 PM »
Last Wednesday I re-learned a valuable lesson in autocross, looking/planning ahead.  In conjunction with that I have been taking a deeper dive into the setup on my 2017 Mazda 3 in preparation for next season which I plan to attend 70-80% of the events.  The decision has been made to add RE71's to the car for next season, I want the grip.  My goal is to remain in H-street but Im not afraid to step up to STS if the benefits can be argued into the PAX time.  My oem wheel size is 18inch and with tire pricing Id like to drop to 17inch wheels.  Now Im told the RE71's fit wider than most tires and as such you need a wider wheel or narrower tire width choice.  I would like to have 225/50/R17 RE71's but from what I can gather I would likely need 17x8 wheels(or wider?) and that might break my budget.   Is it worth spending the extra money on wider rims to accommodate the wider RE71 size I want, or should I just stick with 17x7 rims and drop to a 205/50/R17 size?  Obviously I will need to keep within a +/- 5mm offset for all this if I plan to remain in H-street for the awesome pax adjustment but to accommodate the grip I am looking for with some possible changes to front and rear camber/toe I may just have to step up to STS.

What do you guys think?

SASC Events / June 10th Red Deer
« on: June 05, 2017, 09:46:51 PM »
Hey guys so I registered for June 10th with my Mazda 3, figured a practice event is the most practical for me to shake off the dust and rust in my driving performance.  One problem, I do not own a printer, would it be possible for someone to bring a couple extra self tech forms and I will keep them in a binder in my car for future events?

Technical Talk / Exhaust/Car classification
« on: April 29, 2017, 04:40:36 PM »
Quick question about exhaust and car classification rules. The car Im taking delivery of in a week or two comes with a "dual" exhaust, not a true dual.  Regardless of looks, Id like to skip the dual exhaust and swap for a single axle-back exhaust, 4 cyl motor so dual is unnecessary.  Because its all going to be axle-back modifications and essentially would not gain me anything performance wise, would I be able to retain stock class status? Technically there is the possibility of minor weight savings by not retaining the dual setup but wouldn't that be true of any aftermarket/custom catback or axle-back exhaust swap? Seems like a minor issue and not very likely that anyone locally would protest but I could see the possibility of protest if I decided to enter a national event if there was anything within the rules that prevents me from changing from dual to single.

Technical Talk / Tire Choices 2017
« on: February 03, 2017, 06:04:18 PM »
I thought I would start up a tire choices thread for the upcoming 2017 season.  What's new and upcoming from various tire manufacturers, what were great tire choices from the past 2016 season, and what is in the works for later in the summer.  Im going to be putting down on a set of good street tires this summer with the hope of coming out to one or two YYC events.  So what has everyone heard? What's going to be "the tire" for the 2017 season? Street or R-comp share what you know and lets all have a wicked season in 2017.

Automotive Marketplace / F/S: 95 Subaru STi Type RA
« on: September 27, 2016, 05:23:47 PM »

Up for sale is my White 1995 Subaru Impreza STi Type RA.  Things didn't go as planned, vex has diagnosed the motor with a leaking head gasket and I lack the necessary funding to rebuild or swap another motor in.  I have the inspection sheet from Vex showing that mechanically everything else is in good shape, just needs another motor or a rebuild.  Vehicle was towed home from Vex and has been garage kept and not driven since the head gasket issue.  Would make a great rallycross/autocross vehicle.

Technical Talk / Welded Rear Differential?
« on: August 11, 2015, 03:06:55 PM »
I should have posted this much sooner than last minute.......shame on me lol

So in a couple hours me and a friend are heading to Red Deer to view a vehicle my friend has a very keen interest in.  Its a RWD Nissan 180sx, my friend is a fiend for them.  This one claims to have a welded rear differential done in Japan by a previous owner.  What type of concerns should I have about a welded rear diff? Just the low speed noise? Or can it cause eventual damage to the engine and/or transmission? If said rear diff said goodbye 2 weeks after said friend purchased the car, can it be replaced with an aftermarket unit for under $5000?

SASC Events / Looking to Co-Drive July 25th Practice Event
« on: June 28, 2015, 12:10:51 AM »
Hey all, as some of you know I have been considering a change to rwd.  I am looking for an opportunity to co-drive a Honda S2000 at the July 25th practice in Fort Mcleod.  Being a Honda fanboi I have decided the S2000 is what Id like purchase and would like the opportunity to partially feel one out in Fort Mcleod before I consider pulling the trigger.  Please PM me if this is something you are willing to consider.

General Discussion / Time for a RWD
« on: June 14, 2015, 09:35:46 PM »
Guys I need your help.  I am really having a tough time finding something RWD that would be fun in auto-x, non-vert so that it can be enjoyed in winter as well, and fits my fat bottom and wide hips.  My goal/theory is that driving a RWD coupe for a few years would be a great asset to helping teach myself rwd balance/control.  As badly as I want to try a Miata or S2000 its just not practical for myself.  As much as an RX8 would be fun, I need more reliability.  An FRS would be perfect, except its beyond what Im willing to spend. That being said I wont spend more than $10,000 on this endevour.  Overall I just feel like in FWD I have learned a great deal and without investing heavily into a FWD setup that I do not have as much left to learn.   I feel......to comfortable in FWD......I want to challange myself, and RWD is the ticket I crave.

*My short list for something RWD*

-Nissan 350Z(1st or 2nd Gen)
-Hyundai Genesis Coupe(1st Gen turbo, V6 costs too much still)
-Insert More Cars Here

Pricewise Im pretty much stuck on a 350z or a Genesis.  I drove a newer Genesis Coupe on Ghost Lake and did find I enjoyed the balance.  Honestly I think I felt more balanced in the Genesis than I did in an FRS.  What do you guys think? Have I missed anything?

Member Introductions / Nathan - Intro
« on: December 14, 2014, 03:46:00 PM »
Hey all, my name is Nathan.  Some of you guys know me and have raced with me during our time on the back lot of race city with cscc running rally-x.   Back then I was running a green civic hatch and then a silver intrgra.  Ive run a few auto-x events here and there, looking forward to returning to the pavement next summer hopefully.  I also look forward to returning to Ghost Lake again this winter with my RSX.  Hope to see you all out there.

Here's a quick pic of one of my favorite memories on the ice with Orrin and Cam behind me helping to push my limits.  A big thanks to Ian for the photo.
