Driving Discussion / New Car: Suggestions?
« on: June 28, 2019, 12:41:30 PM »
Yo! How is my favorite club doing these days!   ;D

I was hoping to get some opinions on a new car, I am looking at picking up something fun for next spring. The two I was debating between were the BMW M2 Competition (w/ manual) and the Civic Type R.

Just wondering which one you guys think is generally more competitive for AutoX (assuming they are both on the same brand of tires).

Putting brand new tires on it, and the fuel economy has been a god send this year. Might as well keep it for a while longer!

Technical Talk / Good Cheap Floor Jack for Pits?
« on: February 11, 2017, 11:52:36 PM »
So I am giving up my 106lb cast iron floor jack in hopes of finding something a bit more portable this year. Does anybody have some suggestions for a decent lightweight jack that won't break the bank?

If you basically know what you want, please try to bring exact change. I plan to have some petty cash on hand, but if you try to buy something for 1$ with a 20$ bill I might not be able to make change for it.

There is nothing that is less than 1$. You may offer combined deals (say 3 for 1), I am down for that. I am just not dealing with any change at all... so no quarters, dimes, nickles, or pennies please.

Just a quick note, I am not selling anything early either. I just don't have the luxury of time to be meeting up with people for anything in this price range.

FYI: the large painting is sold to my wife's friend already

Umbrella and Table for sale only:

Thanks guys!

Automotive Marketplace / FS: BRAND NEW: 205/60R16 RE-71R
« on: August 17, 2016, 09:28:52 PM »
So my year is basically done, and I have a set of  brand new 205/60R16 RE-71R's sitting in my garage with the stickers on them still.

Full disclosure: I got them from 1010Tires for 165$ a pop; there is an environmental levy, a bunch of shipping costs, and of course taxes on top of that... but I am a nice guy and I just want them to go to a good home, so I am ignoring all of that and just asking 650$ for the 4 of them.

I absolutely will use them next year if they don't sell, so the price is pretty firm

Member Discussion (Private) / Operational Improvements for Aug 20th
« on: August 10, 2016, 07:09:17 AM »
So a lot of good conversation at the club meeting yesterday, thanks to everybody who came out and added their contribution

There were some suggestions for operational improvements that had quite a bit of consensus from the members who were there, I just wanted to quickly type them out in point form on our private area for the benefit of people who were not able to attend. Also to ensure that my understanding is aligned with everybody else.

1) Spectator Area
There is going to be some caution tape put up at the next event to keep spectators confined to areas which are safe and do not interfere with course operations

2) Waiver Sign In/ Gate Marshal
The site has a great feature of only having one way in and out. My understanding is we would like to have somebody posted there to sign in people and given them direction on where they can park and spectate from. I have a fold out table I can bring for the next event that could help with that.

3) Lead Marshals
There are defined marshal stations, and for each run group there will be a defined leader of each station team. They are responsible to ensure all of the people on their team are present, and providing direction to areas where marshaling is needed most. The lead marshal at each station should have a reasonable amount of experience.

One of the concerns raised at the meeting is that this venue allows us to put a lot more cars on course than before, which means we need to be extra vigilant in dealing with unexpected issues (spin outs, off-course, break downs). The lead marshal for each station is responsible for keeping an eye on the course, transmitting the "stop course" signal when needed, and using the large flag at the station to get cars stopped when necessary.

4) Re-Runs
To minimize back to back re-runs, going forward, re-runs will be taken at the end of each completed set by all cars in grid. For example, if everybody is on their 2nd course run and a few cars do not get a time, they will take their re-run before the first car starts their 3rd course run. Timing will make a written list of re-runs, and that list will be passed off to the grid Marshall as a set warps up.

One thing I wanted to mention is that if you are out marshaling and a car has to stop or slow down for either a marshal or down cone, please radio it in so we can add them to the re-run list. There is no other way for timing to know this without the competitor having to physically come to the timing guys and tell them.

5) Sound station
Going forward there will be 2 marshals for the sound station. One dedicated in grid, and one at the station itself. They will communicate on a dedicated radio channel, and not on the general channel. Warnings for cars getting close to the limit shall be given as a courtesy.

For cars blowing over, the grid sound marshal needs to ask them to make a change before they can run again. For some cars this might mean a physical change, for others they may choose to back off the throttle. For additional infractions, the driver must make a physical change to the car before they are allowed to run again.

As I understand it, the spirit of this rule is if a driver is actively working with us to reduce the sound levels of their car, we want to give them the opportunity to continue to run.

6) Grid Marshals
For upcoming events, there will be 2 grid marshals. One which controls when a car is sent to the line and is responsible for keeping the start supplied with cars, and a second that will be getting people ready 5 cars in advance.

7) Starting Marshal
It was brought up that the starting marshal needs to have a lot of experience. Firstly to scan and ensure the course is safe before sending a car; and secondly, to assess how much time is needed between cars based on how fast they are, and the experience of the driver.

8 ) Event Chair
There will be a designated event chair at upcoming events, this can be a rotating roll. This person is responsible for running the event and any major decisions. These events are not a democracy, whatever the event chair decides, shall go without question or argument.

So I think that about covers it  ;D

Please, if you have comments or questions on any of these, post below

Technical Talk / Tire Gauges?
« on: May 29, 2016, 10:18:56 PM »
I've been chatting with other owners of my car who are Autocrossing in the US, and It has been brought to my attention that perhaps the reason I run such high pressures is because my tire gauge is reading higher than it ought to be. In retrospect, I probably should have invested in a better tire gauge.

Does anybody have some suggestions for gauges? I really don't have the first clue about what a reliable brand would be.

Last event I overheard Terry and Reijo discussing sign up sheets. The basic idea behind that is drivers would sign up when they registered creating a list with virtually no effort, and it would speed things up a bit during the drivers meeting. The inerrant problem that derailed this idea though is that classes should be grouped together as much as possible, and if people would just sign up willy-nilly that would mess everything up.

This got me thinking about if there was a way that this could still be done and still overcome this issue. Also about if there might be other benefits or draw backs to such a system.

The solution I came up with is we could have a sign up sheet based on classes. Generally we have a pretty good idea of the number of cars when registration opens, so based on that we can have either 2 or 3 standardized run group sign up sheets prepared.

The way it would work is upon registration, the driver signs up on the sheet designated for his/her class, when that sheet is full they would automatically overflow onto another sheet (which is the same concept as moving a few people over to even things out). The result would be evenly divided run groups that everybody knows even before the drivers meeting starts.

Granted, this in itself isn't a huge time saver, however where I think this could be very useful is for assigning marshal stations. When you sign up, there would be a populated column on the left hand side with designated marshaling stations (which would correspond to a location on the course map). There are two key benefits; first is that we can ensure that anybody who is new to the sport gets paired up with an experienced person; second is that we get more even coverage on the course with everybody knowing exactly where they are supposed to be.

I think this ties in nicely with the idea raised at the last meeting about assigning marshaling stations

Anyway, I thought I'd put it out there and see what you guys think. If the feedback is good I can prepare some examples for the next meeting for everybody to review.

General Discussion / Fort Macleod Room: April 23
« on: April 12, 2016, 09:43:33 AM »
I rented the 2 bedroom suite at the Red Coat on the 23rd, unfortunately Dan isn't able to make it out for the Saturday event.

It has 2 private bedrooms and a pretty good sized living room, looking to split the cost with somebody (with tax the room is about 140$, so 70$ per person)

Please send me a PM if you are interested

FYI: Red Coat has a pool & Hot Tub
