Technical Talk / Interpretation of ST Class Rule
« on: March 27, 2018, 09:34:04 AM »
Riejo & I exchanged a few messages on this topic & we decided to post this on the forum to see how others would interpret the rules. This is specific to ECU tuning for ST classing. For those that aren't aware, 2018 rules now allow boost changes. I've pasted the rules below, & my question will follow at the end.

The engine management system parameters and operation of internal combustion engines may be modified only via the methods listed below. Any OE OBD2 or newer communications port functionally must remain. The Check Engine Light (CEL) or Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may be disabled via software. Only sensors equipped from the manufacturer may be used for engine management. Data acquisition modifications to the wiring and PCM/ECU are permitted.
1. For all model years, the following allowances apply:
  • a. The standard PCM/ECU may be re-programmed without restriction.
  • b. Fuel pressure regulator(s) may be replaced in lieu of electronic hardware or software alterations. It is not permitted to mechanically alter the fuel pressure regulation AND make other hardware or software changes to engine operation.
  • c. Ignition timing may be set at any point on factory-adjustable distributor ignition systems.
2. For 2005 and older model year vehicles:
  • a. A supplementary (“piggyback”) PCM/ECU is permitted. It must be plug-compatable with the standard PCM/ECU (no splices) and must connect only between the standard PCM/ECU and its wiring harness.
  • b. Electronic components may be installed in-line between the engine sensors and PCM/ECU. These components may alter the signal from the sensor in order to affect the PCM/ECU operation. Example: Fuel controllers that modify the signal from an airflow sensor.
  • c. VTEC controllers and other devices may be used which alter the timing of manufacturer electronic variable-valve systems.
3. 1995 and older vehicles in addition may replace the standard PCM/ECU without restriction.

Does "without restriction" refer to parameters that may be adjusted or does it refer to the means/method of making the changes (ie. piggyback, flash tune etc).......Or does it refer to Both parameter & method

Technical Talk / 2018 STH Class?
« on: September 07, 2017, 11:12:22 AM »
I recently read on another forum that STH class would possibly be reintroduced in 2018 to accommodate hot hatches that aren't fully modified but currently fall in modified class due to the tune increasing boost pressure.
With most hot hatches, an aftermarket tune is not available without a boost increase & this was the driving force behind re-introducing this class.

Do you have more info/insight into this Reijo?

I'm not sure if there are any Bimmer guys in here but I was building a turbo M3 & abandoned the project.
I have a few items still kicking around & would like to get them out my garage.
  • Fresh M52 block with S52 crank & fresh bearings
  • 24x12x3 intercooler (will fit R33 Skyline from what I'm told)
  • Head gasket kit (Victor Reinz)

I have not listed prices since I'm quite motivated to sell & will consider reasonable offers.

SASC Events / Test & Tune Day???
« on: August 01, 2017, 01:41:01 PM »
I may get flamed for this question but I'm wondering if there's any scope for a Test/Tune day to be held maybe in the coming year.
I was at the last practice day & I'm signed up for the next one but I find the format of the last day didn't leave time to actually "tune" anything more than tire pressures & even that was a tall ask if you had to make a substantial amount of adjustment.

In other words, if you weren't ready when it was your turn to go out, you'd have to wait until the grid marshall came back around & that could be a bit of a wait.
This meant, if I wanted to play with alignment settings (assuming i had the appropriate tools required) or even swaybar settings, I'd need more than 10min to make the change.
Ultimately, I may have had only 3 runs for the day & still not ideally set up the car.

Now I know this practice session is over & above what was originally set out for this season & I'm by no means ungrateful but I'm wondering if there's any value in looking for an alternate format which would allow drivers more time to make changes or even an alternate day with a smaller group of competitors that was focused on mechanical setup as opposed to honing in on driving skills.

Thoughts?

Automotive Marketplace / WTB: 18x8 5/112 Wheels
« on: May 30, 2017, 04:02:06 PM »
Hey guys,
Im looking for a spare set of wheels for track use.
Wheels should be straight & should have no prior repairs/welds.
If you have them with RE-71R's I'll consider taking it with tires too.

Thanks

Hi Guys,
I'm Myron aka Myz.
I've autoX'd in the past but this weekend was my first time with SASC.
I thoroughly enjoyed the event & hats off to the organizers.
Its probably the most efficient/well executed events I've attended.

I look forward to meeting many more of you in person

Hey Guys,

I'm looking to get back on track with autocross events.
I raced extensively back home & really missed it since moving to Canada a few years ago.
I've raced Red Deer & Edmonton a few times about 2-3years ago but since I lived too far away from the track, my pocket couldn't afford my addiction.

Now that I'm living in CGY, i'm going to try to make it out to every event my schedule allows....which I'm hoping will be about 80% if not more.
Look forward to meeting you guys in person & having some fun on the track.
