Looks and runs well. Almost a shame to cover it up with a hood. But I did, cuz rules and stuff.

I'd been hoping to get it done in time to drive down to Fort Macleod last weekend to put some break in kilometers on it, but didn't quite get it finished in time.

If I follow Racing Beat's recommends for break-in, I'm supposed to put 3000km on it before wailing on it hard. I doubt I'll make it that long. Shifting at 4K, just when it starts making power (I know this is a relative term for a non-turbo rotary), is already killing me, and I've only driven maybe 30km.  :P

Muchos gracias to John for the loan of his engine stand, returning to the original reason for the thread.

I have years of back issues of Road & Track, Grassroots Motorsports, and a few Car and Driver issues (along with the odd Sport Compact and a bunch of MacWorlds/MacAddict from the mid-90s to mid-2000s, but I seriously doubt anyone cares about those). I'm moving to a bit smaller place in the Okanagan in June, and the bulk of these are not making the trip.

A lot of younger-than-Gen-X whipper-snappers might not have the same affection for print oldsters like me do, but I thought I'd see if anyone in the club is interested, before I list them on Kijiji, or more likely, end up recycling them. I'm not really that concerned to make a buck off them, although if I had the time, I probably could, like how I spent $15 or $20 on eBay for the 1969 R&T where they tested my first car  :D

Prices are totally negotiable, as I have no idea if I'm out to lunch, and if you own a car featured in one, I'm probably inclined to give it to you. I just don't want to throw them all away.

Road & Track: Most issues from Sept. 1993 to 2006, and 2013 to present. A few are missing, either because they tested rotary sports cars and I pulled them, or they just got lost. Most are minty. $50 for the lot, or $5 for specific issues (but I'd really like to see years at time go!).

Grassroots Motorsports: Most issues from mid-2003 to present, but definitely some breaks. Also, a bit less consistent on being in mint condition. Same deal, $50 for the lot, or $5 for specific issues.

Car and Driver: 2006 to 2012, but a lot seem to be missing, '08 to '10 especially, so its a grab bag - $15?

It's a little less "where's Waldo?" to find the 13B now... ;D

As the subject asks, does anyone have an easily portable engine stand they can loan for a few days? Maybe for beer money? Princess Auto has one for sale at a reasonable price, but I'm going to be moving in less than 2 months, and don't want more stuff to just get rid of (new place will not have as big a garage or storage).
I need to get my RX-7's keg together, and while I broke it down without a stand, the bare keg is 160lbs, and I need to flip it a couple times in the process to check the e-shaft endplay, without letting the torrington bearing at the front slide out of place, which I didn't need to worry about when taking it apart.

Find the 13B:

SASC Events / Re: Scores for October 3, 2021 at Fort Macleod

I 2nd Tom's comment - thanks for the quick scoring posting, and thanks very much Murray and Jo for the co-drive - it did, unfortunately, confirm to me that while "Mazda" is generally a very good answer, the most correct answer tends to be "Miata"   ;D :P.

Thanks to all the organizers, setup, and designers for a fun season and great events :D

Thanks for the suggestions Stephen, we'll chase down your ideas too (Dallin was going to post up on Facebook after we made the events public last night).  I did email everyone with a 2021 membership yesterday morning, so we did get it out to everyone already a member, but a facebook post with a 'see the members section' note and a 'not a member, get one here...' could push to a few more memberships (although I do have to add new members so they can see the members only section here - so get your membership soon:)).

John
I forgot to inquire about this, but I had the same issue with not being able to use the members discount code for early reg last week - I suppose the idea is to renew the membership more than 5 minutes before registering for events  ???
I'm assuming this is something that can be fixed in post-production? :)
Thx,
Greg

Hi John,

I registered for my membership last night and when I went to register for this event the member early discount code wasn't working.  Is there a need to manually enter the membership on the backend of msreg that allows the code?

Thanks

Duane

I don't know where this belongs, but I have radio A9 from Saturday - it was my assigned radio, and didn't work properly (both send and receive cut in-and-out, making it very garbled), so I used another from the bag and returned it cleaned (C11, I think). I believe it's assigned to Jo P this morning, so if anyone is anxious about it being missing, don't be, you're not missing anything. I will bring it with me this morning.

SASC Events / Re: COVID-19 Impact on 2021 Season

With the province's accelerated reopen schedule and rejigged (much more generous) guidelines for when to proceed to each stage of the reopening, I'm guessing that it can't be more than late June that we could have events.

Stage 2, which could be by June 15, allows outdoor events of up to 150 people. And if we're being realistic, Stage 2 is going to be by June 15, in order for Stage 3 to kick in ahead of Stampede, which is pretty clearly what's driving the reopen schedule now. Whether or not you think that's sound public health policy, that seems good news for us running events soon - and lest that sound negative, I think it's pretty safe for us, being mostly widely scattered outside all day. So as long as we're playing by the AHS/AB gov't rules, I'm happy to move ahead :)

Automotive Marketplace / Re: WTB - looking for Mazda 13B irons...
« on: August 12, 2020, 10:10:23 AM »
I have checked their website, yes, just thought I'd try putting the word out, see if there's any deals around first... I'm mostly unemployed for almost a year now, soon to be fully unemployed, and it won't take much for some new irons and a seal kit, etc, to add up to the cost of a basic rebuild there, which is some real money. Though that's quite possibly where I'll end up anyway. I can't complain much, it's a 29 year-old car, that's done thousands of autocross and lapping day laps over 22 years - it's just an inconvenient time to finally need a major repair.

Anybody have some leftover S5 13B engine irons, maybe leftover from a Miata rotary swap you never got around to? Asking for a friend whose autocross season may have drawn to a premature close. Pending pulling the motor and tearing it down, but it's likely the coolant seal failure on the rear rotor is really a failure due to corrosion of the groove in the rear or centre irons that holds the seal, rather than just the seal itself.
Or an S5 (89-91) 13B NA engine keg, or a healthy S5 Turbo or 13B-REW (even more unlikely than a healthy S5 13B lying around, I know).

Not a response to your original topic, but your username appears to be your real name (or a real name). You might want to change it to something slightly more anonymous. Not that anyone here is likely to stalk you or make your life difficult, but in the past, insurance companies have done so.

Quite a few years back (like 15+ years), someone at an Alberta autocross event damaged their car, and subsequently claimed it on their insurance, which is not legit - when you are competing, your street insurance is null & void. Car damage (beyond rub marks from cones!) doesn't happen often, but it can. The club carries insurance in the event of injuries to spectators/course workers/damage to venue property, but not your car, so claims on your auto policy are considered fraud if discovered.

The insurer who discovered the false claim for car damage that occurred at an autocross (not a Calgary club), an insurer that represented a large association of Alberta motorists, didn't just cancel the insurance of the person who made the fraudulent claim, they took the liberty of combing the Alberta club forums and preemptively cancelled the insurance of some other participants they were able to identify from event results, etc., and who were insured with the same motoring association. So autocrossing is legal, but you do have to understand your insurance doesn't cover you for what happens at events, and because of how Alberta insurance law is written, your insurer can punish you anyway for doing something legal even if you don't make fraudulent claims.

Long story short, a bit of caution is in order with regard to identifying yourself on a publicly accessible forum, despite this being a perfectly legal activity. This is also why event results show only first names, to make it harder for anyone to identify participants, which is a good idea anyway in the age of social media.

I accidentally completed the registration without the discount being applied, so I don't suppose that can be fixed after the fact?

I too have been having a problem getting the members discount code to apply for Saturday registration; I did the membership renewal today on MSReg, so does it have to wait for someone to add me to the valid list or something?
