Technical Talk / Your Favourite Street Tire and Why
« on: January 25, 2015, 01:50:44 PM »
It's that time of year again, and for the first time ever I'm actually interested in street tires.  What is everyone's favourite?

I was thinking I'd be going with the Dunlops myself, but noticed the Advans and BFG's are on Tire Rack special right now.  (Advan's only 180AA... which won't matter locally...)

I had R1R's on the WRX last year, and don't think I'd do it again.  They come with way too much tread depth, with a co-driver it was a huge struggle to keep them cool...  and they wore incredibly quickly.  In about 3000km I easily went through more than half the tire.  Note Tire Rack has 200AA R1R's available now (not that I'd expect them to wear any differently).

Driving Discussion / Tire Chains
« on: December 08, 2014, 07:15:55 AM »
Anyone have thoughts on tire chains?

I have yet to drive my FRS in this weather, and the more time that passes, the less I think that I'm going to.  Instead I'm driving a Dodge Power Wagon, which with locking and/or limited slip diffs is pretty interesting.  I know Chris S had a truck with chains out on the lake a couple years back, and I've been thinking about buying some myself just to try out.  Four all for wheels...

Question is... can I actually drive the truck with chains on it?  Or do I need to doddle around everywhere and keep wheel speeds low?  Is there any particular type that is best?

Member Discussion (Private) / Event Photographer

Curious if we have anything set aside in the winter driving school budget for a photographer?  I think it adds a lot to the school for students.

I know a couple people (inside and outside of club circles) that we could approach, but I do think we need to pay them.

Forum launched.  Lots of people signing up.  We're going to use some member groups to facilitate some planning for the winter driving schools.  Introduce yourself, or send me a PM if you will be instructing at the Winter Driving Schools, but have not yet been assigned access to the "Instructor Talk" board.

Introducing yourself is another way of helping me identify who is who.

Hi all,

You'll see me at events always standing next to someone short. I'm from NW Calgary, and have been doing auto-x and rally-x for more than a decade.  I like wrenching as much I do driving... although strangely my current car (FRS) is totally stock.  Past cars include many many Toyotas and one Subaru.  The FRS was an obvious choice,

The winter driving schools are my favourite thing all year.
