Was there any interest in setting up the SASC stand at the show this Saturday?

I rode in this the weekend before last and can say that it is a well sorted,  and pretty car.  Oh how I want her.

Anyone here interested in my Bianca...  It's on Kijiji...

SASC Events / Re: Aug 27 Fort Macleod Scores???
« on: September 05, 2017, 01:56:07 PM »
I just read this thread and am assuming there was a timing related incident on August 27.

I'm just going to do a bit of spit balling here as I've never really looked at the radios themselves.  Just thinking of this in a way that may sprout some ideas as I actually break things professionally for my living. Realistically we can't prevent it from ever breaking,  but maybe we can increase the ability of it to survive.

If interested,  I'd love to take on a project like this.  I also mentor at a Junior Engineering Lab,  and have access to much of what's needed,  and a group of youth that need projects to keep them entertained. Smashing cones in testing situations could work off some of their energy before they settle into anything else.  lol Besides...  the Milk carton egg drop is sooooo 1986.

Driving forces, and considerations.
-If the unit gets hit and the whole device is together,  we have some major repairs on the line.
-Units require three main components. Radio transmission,  battery, and some sort of IR sensor correct? Missing anything?
-The heavier the equipment is,  the more damage there is to the cars in an incident.
-The circuit boards have extremely limited survivability without some sort of housing.
-To minimize the cost,  using the current electronics is best.

Spitballing

Separate the components, minimize the repair?
-do the radio, battery and sensor all absolutely need to be co-located? What if the battery and the radio are in a separate safer place,  and the sensor is the only susceptible item?  It may reduce the cost when a repair is needed?

-The sensor would need a remote line,  and a very small housing (Or cone... See below).  The remaining equipment can be as far as the tether physically/electrically can be.

Hitting Cones anyway.
-What about using a cone as a vessel?  Some soft foam and a small flexible structure inside the cone may work.  Cut a hole in the cone for the sensor to shoot out of.  A couch foam could be cut to a cone shape and little cutouts in that foam could house the battery radio and sensor. Using strips of foam glued together gives a bit more structure to the whole foam piece,  that could be cut to fit in a cone.
The cone withstands the brunt of it,  and the foam disperses as much of the force as it can.

This idea would be basically placing the circuit boards and the battery somewhere in the middle of the foam that would fill the cone.  A sensor pocket could be made and just needs to line up with the hole cut in the cone. Leave the foam as a separate piece for ease of removal from the cone. Maybe as two separate halves with the weight in the middle.

Both
-Maybe putting a remotely tethered sensor in a cone is best,  and the remaining hardware is elsewhere.

Maybe this post will spur on the best solution through further discussion....  Thoughts?

Fast and fun cars.  I loved mine, and found it very capable.  Begs to question though....  What arrives on the 28th?

I filled my required events for both RD and FM.  I'm just rolling in the YYC's for the rest of the season.

One of the most exciting afternoons I've had racing.  Thanks to everyone for the chance to run in an event like this.

Do it already James. You aren't going to find the one you want in the right color paint & interior and and and.

The only thing holding me back is the lack of garage.

Park at your dad's. just bring the corvette out to race day only lol

Haha I already live there, there's no room for any more vehicles. My mom told me I can buy one but it can't stay in front of the house, and I have a tenant renting out my own place including the garage so I can't store it there either...

There are always options for renting a garage space over the winter.

Same for Team 2. Our slowest time wasn't cut. The top raw team had their slowest time cut giving them a 176.686 where I count our team with our slowest time cut as a 172.532, not 180.967 putting us in fourth.   ???

Thanks again to everyone organizing and setting up the event.

I just never felt like I got in my stride yesterday (not that my "stride" is much better than how I did yesterday). I'm not sure what it was about the course that I couldn't figure out. I DNF'd the first run and don't know where, as all the other runs seemed the same... with the exception of hitting every damn cone out there. The final kick to the pants was forfeiting my rerun, because my hood wouldn't latch! Really... a hood not latching?!

All in I still had fun, despite the sun burns and the poor showing on my part.

SASC Events / Re: Sound at SASC Events
« on: July 04, 2017, 09:56:21 AM »
Personally I feel we should keep this more on topic. Environmentalists, Extremists, the NDP, and "the children" have little to do with the event this weekend. In the end we can agree that some people can never be fully pleased... However those same people have potential to end events at YYC,  so reasonable limits through all conditions must be met to avoid that scenario.

I can only speak from the experience in my car as I have never run the sound station,  but had to have the warning conversations in the pits this weekend.

My car traditionally has never blown over 73 dB at other events.  This event however I did average 73.4 dB with a high blow of 78.6 dB on the last run of the morning.  While most of my runs were exactly as expected,  there was one unexpectedly high result,  and a couple slightly higher than the norm.

I have been reading about the effects of heat on sound over the last day or so,  to see if that could have been a probable explanation for the slightly higher results and occasional very high result.  Although the velocity of propagation is higher in the heat and can cause greater refraction of sound off the ground; with it being as dry as it was on Sunday,  the two effects should have cancelled and at 50ft,  it should have been a very minor change. My theory also doesn't support the fact that from my own personal experience I experienced the occasional pop up in sound,  and the largest pop being before the full heat of the day set in.

Personally I think that the park and ride here is the best venue we have and will do my part to ensure we keep it.  I just thought I'd add in my personal experience and a theory I explored a little since then.  As an aside.... Sound propagation and it's relation to heat is some great bed time reading.   ???

I had a look at the overall scores posted,  and could have sworn that the Regionals had a place on the 2017 Championship. Looking at it now,  I'm guessing that the 17/18th didn't put any points toward the Overall Championship scores, or am I missing the plot somewhere?

Technical Talk / Re: Electric converted cars

Correct on the extinguishers. Electrical tires require a C rated extinguisher to be most effective, and B for gasses. Many extinguishers for general duty are rated ABC for all types of fires. It wouldn't surprise me if the clubs extinguishers were already ABC rated. It is certainly something to consider in car as well.

I would have guessed that there was more provisions for electric cars in the SCCA by now.   :-[

Formula V does not qualify as EM car.

I was just thinking as a base for the electric car. I've seen some pretty crazy contraptions autocross out of the states.

Good luck! Enjoy the build. Looking forward to seeing you compete down the road.
For once a seriously modified vehicle, not worried about sound limits.

Well I'm just shopping the idea now.  I have a friend with connections into the formula Vee game ( I know next to nothing of these cars though),  and I'm shopping the idea of using a chassis from there as well.

It will all come down to the founder of Roots2Stem and if it's a project he'd like to take on.
