This past weekend I heard there was a question about what to do if you are driving on the course and you encounter a down or moved cone?

Like a lot of things in this sport, there is a rule about it!  Go figure, eh?  :)

In a nutshell, you must stop or at least slow and point the cone out to a course worker and if they acknowledge it, it should be radioed in as such and you will get a re-run.  Simple, right?  Well, perhaps not always.

What if you were mistaken and the cone was in place?

And what do you do, once you have pointed out the displaced cone?

Well, here's the answer (that was revised this year by the way!  Even common parts of the rules are worth reviewing every now and then to ensure you are familiar with procedures and rules - always something to learn):

2017 SCCA Rules, Section 7.4

7.4 RERUNS

Reruns will be granted only for timing failure, object on the course, red flag, or other situations at the discretion of the Chief Steward and will not be given because of mechanical or other failure of the competitor’s car. A minimum of five (5) minutes must have elapsed before a competitor may take a rerun.

If the Chief Steward or designated representative awards a competitor a provisional rerun, it should be taken as soon as practical, subject to the “five minute rule” above and the discretion of the Chief Steward. The Chief Steward
should notify the competitor which run is considered provisional.

Pylon penalties are not carried over to the rerun. A DNF (Did Not Finish) on a run for which a rerun would have been given shall stand and no reruns shall be given.

46 — 2017 SCCA® National Solo® Rules

7. Timing and Scoring

In the case in which a competitor is red-flagged or stops for a displaced or downed cone on the course, the competitor must thereafter continue through the remainder of the course at a reasonable pace below competition speed and will be granted a rerun if appropriate. Delaying the event by failing to complete the remainder of the course in a timely fashion, or incurring additional penalties, may result in forfeiture of the rerun. During the remainder of the run, DNF’s or off-course penalties will not be scored provided the competitor follows the general route of the course and exits in a timely fashion. (e.g. straight-lining
a slalom is acceptable, but cutting across the course or through a corner station is not.)

N.B.  The red text above is a recent addition to the rules.  I noticed even at the SCCA Nationals that cars were not exiting the course in a timely fashion once they spun or encountered a downed/displaced cone.  What was happening was that there could be as many as 3 other cars on course and these other cars were catching the cars dawdling along which would result in even more re-runs!  It was a problem.  Hence, the idea to hustle through the rest of the course in order to get out of the way .... maybe 80% speed but NOT 100% ...

SASC Events / Sound logs for May 14/17 - YYC Championship #2
« on: May 17, 2017, 03:20:19 AM »
Here's the sound logs for Sunday, May 14, 2017 from Championship #2 (combined CSCC/SASC) from the YYC/Budget lot in Calgary.

Max. Db allowed is 93 db measured at 50 ft. (15.24 meters) perpendicular to the track, at 3-4' height, low response setting etc. as per SCCA Solo Rules:

3.5 MUFFLERS
Adequate mufflers are required for Solo® events. The criterion of “adequacy” is not what the exhaust system consists of, but the sound level. Any car deemed by the Event Chairman or his designated representative to be excessively loud shall not compete without acceptable modifications installed on
the car.

And I have attached Appendix I of the SCCA Rules:  Sound Meter Procedures for your reading enjoyment!   :)

Sound logs for May 13/17.

Note that the Novice/BMW Schools were in the separate lot and will not have results in the AM since the sound meter was located at the Practice Course only.

For Novice/BMW School sound logs, look at the May 13/17 PM results.

Hi all,

We hope to be setting up on Friday afternoon again, so if you are available, let me know and we'll arrange a time to get over to YYC and set up the courses for Saturday.   It took almost exactly 2 hrs. to pick up the cones and equipment from storage last time ... and there is plenty of daylight.  I'm thinking the course may be slightly easier to set up this time (I could be wrong.   :)  ).....but still around 2 hrs.

We will also need help instructing the BMW school (need more senior/expert drivers/instructors for this since we are dealing with some very experienced people although perhaps not in autox, although some will be new to performance driving).

We will need some novice instructors for the Saturday as well - raw beginners for the most part etc.

Let me know.

Looking forward to a bunch of runs this coming weekend!   Two days in a row!  And, yes, we run rain or shine (actual forecast and conditions forecast will continue to change until the day!  hahaha).

Member Introductions / Novice School and Practice
« on: May 09, 2017, 10:12:13 AM »
Saturday, May 13, 2017.

The Novices will be on the NE lot and separate from the main lot for the morning at the least.

Practice course will be in the usual location.  You should get plenty of runs!

Note that members of the BMW Club will be guests of ours today as well so we are organizing a special school (separate from the novice school) for them.  Some have track experience etc.  However we can use some help via instructors - let me know if you wish to help.

Technical Talk / F1 Interview and the mental game
« on: May 04, 2017, 11:25:24 AM »
This is a very interesting interview and summary of the Russian GP with David Brabham and Perry McCarathy (the original stig) who are both former F1 drivers.

What I found interesting was their discussion of the mental game and how that changes over the years etc.  It is a huge issue and can easily be the difference between winning (or a good result) and a so-so result.

At the SoloPro Schools I will be bringing Jonn Renay out again to discuss the mental game ... how to be in winning form, mentally.  Over the past winter we have continued to meet and discuss this aspect of racing/competition and how it is a key to winning.  L2 and Extreme will get some information from Jonn ... maybe even a separate lecture in the evening.  We are discussing how we are going to do this.

Enjoy!

Other Events / Crow's Landing Championship Tour .... this weekend.
« on: April 28, 2017, 05:00:55 PM »
Today, Friday, they will have a practice course, registration, welcoming party etc. at Crow's Landing (SE of San Francisco ... google/earth AFB Crow's Landing and you should find it ... wish we had sites like this!).

Locals attending are the same ones who were at the Pro last weekend - Jay/Orieta/Ambrose in SS/GT3 and Wayne/Ryan in BS/Cayman S.

Registrations, run groups/heats, event schedule and other info at the SCCA web site here:

https://www.scca.com/events/1986520-2017-tire-rack-crows-landing-championship-tour

Live results etc. will be on Solo Live as per usual:

http://www.sololive.scca.com/

I see there are 230 entries .... one of the smaller Tours .... which often number close to 300 for entries.

SASC Events / April30, Course map discussion and availability.
« on: April 28, 2017, 03:10:06 PM »
Going back and stealing the comment from the other topic:

"Will the course maps be available before the event?"

My response in the other topic:

"Normally they are not ... although I wonder why we don't.

At bigger events I guess there should not be an unfair advantage for anyone etc. etc.

Or maybe it is just a hangover from old days when there were only paper copy, if any!

Mind you at the SCCA Nationals, when you arrive, you get a course map BUT it is not published beforehand on-line anywhere.   Having said that, if you are running on Thurs/Fri, and if you arrive on-site for the Pro on the previous Friday/Saturday, you do not get the Solo Nationals course maps until Sunday (or whenever on-site registration opens).  Nevertheless you can have the maps a few days before you run on Thurs/Fri.  But I guess that can't be helped nor that you can walk both courses many times Sun-Thurs so there is a bit of a disadvantage for Tues./Wed. people.  However there is ample time to walk the course even if you drive Tues./Wed. ... do the walks on Monday (the day off).

And, the main reason?  Well, if I don't have time to do the course design until late the night before?   Well, now you know the rest of the story!  hahaha  I have to work during the week at least a little bit to support this habit of mine since I don't get paid (at least most of the time ... and not much when I do!) to do this!    :)"

ANY THOUGHTS?  ANY OBJECTIONS IF I RELEASE THE COURSE MAP FOR SUNDAY NOW?

(PS, I finished it a couple days ago but did not release it ... and a good thing since I made some changes!  hahaha .... can't give myself too much time or I keep changing it!   Anyway, maps are printed and I have scanned it).

Shall I post it here?   If no objections I will do so shortly.

Cheers,

Reijo

Other Events / Crow's Landing Pro Solo - Apirl 21-23
« on: April 22, 2017, 01:21:20 AM »
Article from SCCA (Ryan Clark is mentioned in there as a favourite for winning BS ... and Wayne is co-driving).  Ambrose Fung from here and Jay with Orieta are in SS as well.  Orieta is in L2 (ladies 2 class).

Test starts and a test 'n tune course was held Friday with the actual competition beginning like normal on Saturday morning:

https://www.scca.com/articles/2006014-2017-tire-rack-crows-landing-prosolo-tune-in

You can follow along for live results here (Sololive) like usual:

http://sololive.scca.com/

Also at the link above is the run order.  L2 runs first (Orieta), SS runs in the 2nd group and BS in Group 4.

There will be some incredible battles there .... especially STR!
