SASC Events / LOST AND FOUND: mugs and fleece! From YYC and before
« on: April 20, 2017, 01:28:49 PM »
There are a number of items in the lost and found dept (such as it is).

I remember I was talking to someone about a coffee travel mug last spring (by the way we have more than one), an air pump (manual), and from this past Sunday a fleece.

Let me know if you are missing anything.  Some items are in Fort Macleod at our storage and some items I have here (a couple of mugs and the fleece).

Let us know and we'll arrange to get it to you!

Photo of fleece attached.   It was found at the start line.

Other Events / Thank you for all the help last weekend!
« on: April 20, 2017, 09:37:09 AM »
Before I forget!

On Saturday, Bill R., Paul T., Julie and Jeff T. came out to move cones and equipment from the Public Storage (about 4 km. west of the site), to the YYC site.

It took almost exactly 2 hrs to be completely set up!  12:30 pm - 2:30 pm.  So a big thanks to Bill, Paul, Julie and Jeff for helping out!

And on the morning of the event, an impromptu novice orientation was held that seemed to work out quite well as an introduction to autox.  Thanks to Dan O. (our Novice Coordinator) and Tom M. for working with me to make that a success!

And then on Sunday after the event, Bill R., Rob P. (and his son, Greg (?) and gf) helped to load, transport and move all the equipment and cones back to the storage.  Thanks a bunch!

It takes a team effort to put on these events so thanks for all the help!

With a number of people, the work goes much faster and also builds the community!   :)

We can always use a bit more help so please, even if you are new, do not hesitate to offer help and join the fray.  It is a good way to get to know how events run and meet more people .... who can be helpful for setup, driving etc. advice ... and even secrets on what it takes to go fast!

SASC Events / Course map for Sunday, April 16
« on: April 14, 2017, 07:40:04 PM »
I took one of last year's (last one or 2nd to last?) course and worked it over to produce this one .... lots of good exercises in it - looking ahead, slaloms, sweepers, variations in speed (but not too much speed at Murray's request!  :)  ) ... After I designed it, I thought it would have been a good championship course!   hahaha

I have 100 copies made ... 77 entries right now ... and may approach 90 maybe?  Dunno.  But you can print one for yourself and have it handy and maybe even study it a bit closer ... There are a few little tricks to it.  :)

SASC Events / Help for course set-up Saturday afternoon.
« on: April 14, 2017, 12:21:46 PM »
Paul T., Bill R. and I will be meeting at the Public Storage (90 Country Hills Landing NW) at 12:30 pm Saturday to pick up cones and set up the courses for Sunday.

Another hand or two would be nice if there is someone looking for something to do.  It would take about 2 hours to set up I figure since it will be a fairly simple course and we are not lining the course etc.

Thanks Paul and Bill!  Help is always appreciated greatly!

SASC Events / Novices for this Sunday - April 16.
« on: April 14, 2017, 11:42:37 AM »
On Sunday, we will do something a bit different.

At the YYC events we have noticed a significant number of new people with little or no autox experience and so to address this we will have a mini-school on Sunday morning for the newbies among us.

Dan O'Byne(our Novice Coordinator!) and I (maybe someone else will volunteer to help us too?) will be setting up a separate course on the lot to the NE of the main lot with some basic elements and will go over some basics of autox and what you need to know to be successful at this sport ... and more specifically at the first few or more events!

We'll cover some or all (but not restricted to the following topics):
- seating position - proper reach for pedals, steering wheel, phone (ok ... not that.   :)  ).
- hand position on the steering wheel and proper operation of the steering wheel and the other pedals for that matter!  (hint:  They are not on-off switches)
- how cones are positioned and how they make up a course (e.g. down-and-out rule, pointer or lay-down cones and what they mean, lane changes, sweepers, slaloms etc.).
- some technical (e.g. ideal tire pressures, car set-up - but very minimal since driving skills will help you more than any car prep).
- rules - Canadian/ASN and SCCA
- our region and national series ... USA/SCCA series - brief introduction to our world!
- smoothness and lines ...  You will likely never hear the end of these!
- looking ahead.  I KNOW you will never hear the end of this topic!  hahaha
- other topics that may come up.
- our Novice and Regional Championships.  Yes, you can win prizes in your first year!  Get a membership and sign up!

By then you'll have some basics and we can release you out on the "big" course for the remainder of the day.

I would suggest many ride-alongs with more experienced drivers (this is a practice so few will worry about their times or any competition ... I may eat my words here though!  hahah) to see what they are doing and to get your bearings.

See you Sunday!

Technical Talk / What is a Pro Solo?
« on: April 01, 2017, 10:51:09 AM »
For the benefit of the new people among us and perhaps those who have never run a Pro Solo:   Basically it is a crooked drag race with a Christmas tree/lights (just like a drag race facility) with mirror image (more or less because they are never "exactly" the same) courses.  You even have "staging lights" for lining up cars just like a drag strip.

You have to make sure both little white staging lights are lit up or else your run will not count ... and also that your car does not roll forward or backward due to the slope of the pavement!  Some times you have to hold the brake (like heel-and-toe) to stay put which makes the start even more challenging!

Both cars start at the same time (except the challenge rounds later when times are offset because cars are from different classes), and included in your time is your reaction time!  So you have to be "on top of" the lights be quickly out of the box so to speak.  But not too fast.  If your reaction time is less than 0.5 seconds, you get a red line and your run is DSQ ... just like a drag race.

You also get a 60 ft. time (time it takes to get to a distance 60' from the start ... and this is always straight so a drag race type of launch is done each time).  A good time for a RWD is around 2.0-2.2 seconds or so depending on class whereas faster (SP, SSM, etc.) mid-engine and AWD cars often get down to about 1.7 seconds or even as low as 1.5 seconds (monster GTR) ...

Often there is a section of the course layout when you may be facing (or close to) the other side and you can check your progress or lack thereof ... or see if the other person broke, spun, or is coasting through the course (e.g. they hit a cone ... same 2 sec. penalty)......and then you can take it easier.  But in the opening rounds when you are looking for qualifying times, then you are looking to set your best times on each side of the course in order to qualify for the final Challenge rounds on Sunday afternoon ...

Or some are so fast, they tend to "sandbag" ... or hold back a little bit in order to get an advantage in the final Challenge rounds by having a bit in the pocket when coming up against some stiff competition from other classes.

And, if they "break out" (kind of like bracket racing in drag racing) in the Challenge Rounds (e.g. they run faster than their qualifying time), then their new "dial-in" time becomes the time they are aiming for when running against another car from another class.

Of course, if you run a perfect run in the qualifying rounds (Sat. morning, Sat. afternoon and Sunday morning), then it will be hard for you to beat or even match that time!  You, then, face greater odds of being eliminated in the Challenge rounds ... Of course the person lined against you is facing the same dilemma!

It is all quite exciting I find!  I enjoy the Pros a bit more than the regular National level Solos but they are a bit harder on drivetrains due to the drag race style launch.  Nothing like lining up against another car and seeing who can get out of the box first (and not red light)!     :)

We have talked of introducing Pros here too but we would need a new timing system designed for that specifically, including a tree and an even larger lot!  Hopefully Badlands will build a large enough "parking lot" in the pit area so we can host some Pros there!  I know I have spoke with Jay about that in the past and, he is, in fact, running the Pro in Fontana today and tomorrow!   :)

As a sidenote, we did run a sort-of Pro Solo format inside the Race City oval in the early 2000's but we were limited by our timing system etc. but they were fun to do!

The closest Pro to us is at Packwood, WA (about 2.5 hr. drive SE of Seattle) ... and about 12 hours of travel time from Calgary via Spokane and Yakima.

Here's some more info from the SCCA web site here:

https://www.scca.com/pages/prosolo

Also, just noticed that there is an explanation of what a ProSolo is on YouTube (done in 2013 ... had not seen this one before!) with Max Hayter (LA), Glen Hernandez (Seattle), Teresa McKee (San Francisco) and Jeff Kiesel (San Diego outskirts) give a great explanation of what it is like.  The filming was done at El Toro AFB in Orange County (SE corner of metro LA).  You can also see more Pro Solo You Tube videos by googling them:

Technical Talk / Nexen Tire contingency
« on: March 31, 2017, 08:57:35 PM »
FYI:

http://www.racernexencontingency.com/

Jason Isley and Brian Heitkotter were testing these tires recently (SU4 which just came out) which are about to compete in the Street class wars.  There is someone running them at Fontana this weekend ... have to check out who.  Rumour is they are competitive ... and also much cheaper ... might be a consideration for tires ...

Other Events / Fontana Pro Solo - Friday - Sunday
« on: March 29, 2017, 03:47:36 PM »
Fontana is at the Autoclub (former) super speedway in the SW corner of the property in the green lot.  This is a large lot where the LA region has most of their regular solo events (looks like El Toro is done now ... development has encroached on the old AFB unfortunately).

Article:
http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/event.status/uidEvent/F9DAA24E-BE2E-9FDD-A93D9BE5A0A2974E

233 entries right now and a few from here are running:

Jay - SS,
Orieta - L2
Ryan C/Wayne D. - BStreet

Practice starts will be on Friday and competition on Sat/Sun.

Live timing/scoring and link to streaming video will be here (when they go live on Saturday morning):
