SASC Events / Set up and tear down teams on Saturday and Sunday YYC5
« on: October 26, 2016, 10:43:57 AM »
I`d like to have set up and tear down teams for YYC5 ... e.g. a worker position.  You will not have to work during the event this way unless you want to volunteer to help out.

Paul has already volunteered to help setup on Saturday afternoon (say 3:30-4 pm) so I could use a couple more I guess.....there may be some setup left for Sunday morning but likely not too much.  We also have to pick up the cones at the storage.

Public Storage:
Harvest Hills Blvd N/Country Hills Rd NW
90 Country Hills Landing NW, Calgary, AB T3K 5P3

And, then on Sunday after the event I could use 2-3 people to help pick up the cones and equipment and deliver to the storage (about 5 km. east of the site just off of Harvest Hills BLVD.).

Thanks,

Reijo

SASC Events / Helpers to set up needed Friday night - Oct. 7, 2016 - YYC
« on: October 06, 2016, 10:37:57 AM »
We are hoping to save time and do more of the course set-up on Friday night ... specifically 5:30 pm and after.

Sun is down around 7:30 pm so it won't be long and we'll finish the setup Saturday morning like normal if necessary.

Anyway, Wayne, Ryan and I will be at the YYC ... pick up the cones from the storage nearby and then set as many cones as we can before the sun goes down ....

We could use maybe 2-3 or so people to help out to make it happen faster and more efficiently.

Anyone available to help out?  Address is 220 Airport Trail - the former Park 'n Jet lot ... access via 22nd St. NE from the north.

Thanks!

Automotive Marketplace / Looking for a garage ... and insurance?
« on: October 05, 2016, 09:07:24 PM »
I recently signed a contract to rent a garage but due to a stipulation that I carry tenant/contents insurance, I cannot rent it because the insurance companies won't insure it ... Reasons given:  Owner does not live in the house, no one renting it now; don't know who will be renting it.  This is a stand-alone garage in the Kensington NW area ... at the back of a bungalow - nothing special.

They also mentioned that if the garage burned down and if the house burned down as a consequence that they would not cover the loss.

So, basically, I cannot rent the garage.

Anyone heard of this before?

Anyone know of a garage to rent?

SASC Events / Photos (and videos) from Oct 1/2 ...

Here's my photos.  No photos from the 1st group running since I was working at that time ... so exclusively of the 2nd group except for a few general photos I suppose.

My main intent was to photograph the apron access slalom (4-cones) to see how people were doing getting on the backside of cones etc. ... plus a few of the pits/people etc.

Enjoy!

Technical Talk / Flagging - how to ...
« on: September 27, 2016, 03:59:50 AM »
At least a couple of times this weekend we had a new issue crop up that we had not dealt with recently and I realized that we needed to have a refresher on how it "should" happen.

Probably why we have this issue is that we have had small or irregular lots in the recent past where we have at most one other car on-course (and not 2 or 3 other cars ... or even 4 in some cases) and if there is any "incident" then everyone (e.g. 1 car at most) is flagged down wherever it is on-course.  For Fort Macleod and the Westerner this would be correct.

However, with no doubling back on the course design at YYC/Budget/Park 'n Jet, this is not the proper procedure for flagging since there is more than 1 other car on-course.

What I noticed:   Car spun out or otherwise.   All the corners flagged all cars on the course - 3 cars.  All 3 cars are granted re-runs.

What should have happened:

1.  Car spins out or otherwise breaks down or stops on-course ... or is caught by a faster car (due to a spin etc.).

2.  Corner worker(s)/flagger at station 4 should be alerted by station, say, 5 that a car is not moving or not fast enough etc. to keep an eye out to see if the car can get under way again ... and in time.

3.  Flagger at station 4 (the corner before) should watch to see if the next car is going to catch the car ahead and if it appears to be the case, then flag the next car.  NO OTHER stations should be flagging any cars at this point in time.

4.  Exception:  There is a car on fire/big smoke/big breakdown such as a suspension piece, wheel/tire falls off, they flew through a fence etc. .... in which case we KNOW POSITIVELY that the car will not get under way on its own power, then it is OK to flag down all cars on-course.

5.  Therefore if done properly there should be no more than 1 re-run if there is a car spun out somewhere at most ... if that.

6.  ALSO as a side note, there is a new rule in the SCCA rule book, stating that if a car is red-flagged, they should stop.  But once they are given the go-ahead by a corner worker, they are to proceed BRISKLY along the course and out of the way of the next car coming in order to prevent re-runs!  Yes, they actually had to put that rule in because people were being too tardy in getting off the course after being red-flagged and cars were catching them resulting in even more re-runs ... unnecessarily ... at the Nationals even ... I have seen that happen.  Corner workers waving flags and trying to get cars to hurry along and they were idling along toward the finish oblivious to the fact that someone was catching them!  They HAVE to hustle to get out of the way ... say about 80% speed ... and that is QUITE brisk pace-wise ... You have to keep moving.  Basic rule-of-thumb, is that it is not competition speed ... no tires squealing ... but definitely NOT SLOW.  lol .. .now I have images of people screaming, swearing and gesturing wildly at the cars going too slow on course ... hahaha ... true story ... on more than one occasion.  It is frustrating to see.  So, moral of the story:  Get the hell out of the way!   :)

7.  Therefore the benefit is that, we will have only 1 re-run rather than 3.  It is a time-saver and, of course, less re-runs ... rubber etc.

8.  Another thing I noticed was some cars coming to a stop in the stop chute.  It is not necessary to stop and it is discouraged in fact!  I noticed at least one case when a car stopped in the straight portion of the chute and they were almost caught by the next car coming in hot!  That looked a bit iffy to me ... please, no stopping at the end!  It can be a problem.

Hopefully that all makes sense and we can learn from this and do better in the future.

haha....sport is complex isn't it?   :)

But as events get larger we need to run a tighter ship so to speak and those of you who have attended SCCA National-level events such as Packwood, San Diego, San Fran, Lincoln Nats, will know of what I speak.  The level of organization at those meets is at a different level and we need to bring some of that to our local larger events to run properly.

Technical Talk / Spreadsheet for daily runs calculations
« on: September 20, 2016, 06:36:37 PM »
Made up a spreadsheet today mainly for the YYC3 event but it can be used for others.

1.  Excel format.
2.  Basic assumptions made.
3.  You can download (see below) and try different scenarios if you wish.

Questions?

Basically, the faster we send cars out, the quicker we can run events.  SCCA National staff know this and that is why they are very, very strict with sending out cars at the SCCA Nats at 20 seconds or less apart ... but NEVER more than 20 seconds apart since they will not finish by 5 pm otherwise.  They run approx. 300 cars x 3 runs or 900 runs plus re-runs in 5 heats of about 60 cars each between 8 am and 5 pm..... no lunch breaks etc.   So, 900 runs (approx) in 9 hours ... 100 runs per hour.

General Discussion / YYC 3 event details
« on: September 20, 2016, 03:31:21 PM »
I think the best option is to concentrate on us running the events more efficiently at this time ...  100 entries should not be an issue at all and we should easily be able to do two full events in a day.

That means helping out setting up the course, getting cones and equipment from the storage (5 min. away/a few km), and generally doing whatever needs to be done.

Also, during the day of the event if we want to do more runs then we need to be better at working the course and running for downed cones, positioning workers near cones that are likely to be hit, being prompt in grid/lining up, being ready to run when at the line (e.g. no doing up of belts, helmets etc. at the line ... This should be done in the grid prior to moving), worker change-overs and generally anything that takes time.

We will also be running 3 run groups according to our last discussions so there is no lunch break other than when you have time off so that will save an hour + .

So, we have to work together.  That is the bottom line.  I know we can do well if we put our minds to it.   :)
