Technical Talk / Re: 2015 Street Tire Treadwear Ratings
« on: December 15, 2014, 04:20:10 PM »
I still don't understand why the government or someone has brought in a standardized tire test procedure...

The government left it to the tire companies.  For most people what matters is how long the tires last:   Will they last 100,000 km. or more?

And,then there is us.  ;)

I'm lucky if I get more than 10,000 km. out of a set of street tires ..... or maybe 50 runs x 1 km. = 50 km. for a set of Hoosiers!   LOL

Yes, we can make an exception for local club events (I would be ok with that .... however I don't have a dog in this fight as they say).   Also let's not forget that these tires will be another year older .... that much harder .... (gee, they might meet the 200 threadwear rating now?   You think?) ... that much less competitive.   Fresh tires will likely be faster anyway.

There should be some S2000 guys around with 245 wide 16's around  (Murray maybe?) .... don't know if I have any of those left lying around ...   In fact, I think Murray might have a set of Hankook Z214's in a 245-16 for sale ... Murray?

You are welcome.....and the Hankook is the other one you should look at.  Ventus Z214.

You might want to look at the 245 size ... some times the R's are a bit wider than a street tire ... but the specs are all on the Tire Rack site ...   You could also ask around locally to see if anyone has one used tire to use for fitment ...

Go to the Tire Rack web site and you can review all the specs on all the tires - Hoosier, Dunlop .....  Check your tire width, dia. etc. then compare to the Hoosiers....   Something I would check into is the 275-50-15's .... if they fit you'll get a lot of grip!!!  Hoosier is, of course, the fastest one ..... There are other R's available like the Kumho V710's but you are giving up perhaps 0.75 sec. on a 60 second run on them ... Toyo has some too but are even slower .... BFG R1's .... think all but the Toyos are on the Tire Rack site.....   For local events you could save money by running something other than Hoosiers ... but even then ... there is nothing to compare to the purple "crack" ... :)

Driving Discussion / Re: Tire Chains
« on: December 08, 2014, 10:06:59 AM »
I know Chris broke at least one of the chains at the lake ... probably by too much wheel spin?    They are meant for low speed application  (I seem to remember 45 mph) and not highway speeds although some of the "new" chains are more like cables and may withstand more speed than the heavy chains .... (think of the damage they can do if they let loose...).  But chains have been around for a long time ... remember seeing them on tractors and trucks etc. when conditions were really bad when I was a kid in NW Ontario....   They work.

I don't know about types but typically you get what you pay for ... 'nuff said.

Interestingly enough the warm weather doesn't seem to affect the ice thickness as much as I used to think.  We have to remember that it still dips below freezing at night ... and often most of the 24 hrs of a day are still below freezing ....

Anyway, I'll be out to check the ice thickness again as time permits or if I happen to be going out that way for work etc.

SASC Schools / Ice thickness and Ghost Lake visit - Dec. 7,14 2014
« on: December 07, 2014, 07:39:45 PM »
I was out at Ghost Lake late this afternoon and measured the ice at a little over 10" thick.  11" of blue (good) ice is sufficient to hold up a 3/4 ton truck (with a safety margin).  However at the bottom of the boat ramp there was an open area where the edge of the ice was broken .... e.g. deep puddle.
