Where to buy Helmet and Gloves?
« on: October 30, 2016, 08:38:18 PM »
My M2005 helmet is expiring at the end of this year and it's a cheapie, so I was thinking of splurging on a nice Simpson helmet or something similar and also picking up some racing gloves at the same time...

Do you guys have recommendations on where I might be able to try these things on and buy locally? Thanks!
It's a Fiesta!

Shawn Bishop / Rallysport.ca is a good place to check out.

Where did you find out that M2005 is no good after this year?  (asks a fellow M2005 helmet owner...)

If I'm not mistaken, it's the current and previous snell certifications that are allowed. New one late 2015 means the 2015s and 2010s are allowed, and 2005 is too old.

This topic gets beaten to death mostly because guys like me chime in with maybe incorrect information, confusing everyone in the process.

The people at GW Cycle World are knowledgeable and have a lot of stock to try on for size, even if you don't buy there.

M2005 helmets are perfectly legal.

Canadian rule:

Quote
4.5.2 Acceptable helmets:
 FIA 8860-2004
 FIA 8860-2010
 FIA 8859-2015
 Snell 2015 SA, or 2015 M
 Snell 2010 SA, 2010 SAH, or 2010 M
 Snell 2005 SA, or 2005 M (expiry 31.12.2018)
 SFI Foundation 31.1/2015
 SFI Foundation 31.1/2010
 SFI Foundation 31.1/2005 (expiry 31.12.2018)

American rule:

Quote
All helmets meeting the latest or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation
standards (SA2015, SA2010, SAH2010, SA2005, SA2000, M2015, M2010,
M2005, M2000, K2015, K2010, K2005, K98); SFI standards 31.1, 41.1, 31.1A,
31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A; ECE R22.05; FIA standards 8859-2015, 8860-2010, 8860-
2004; or British spec BS6658-85 type A are acceptable.

Maybe he means that his helmet's aged out and needs to be replaced, independent of legality?

I just checked the FIA site and they seem to have updated the M2005 and M2010 to expire at the end of this year.  I would assume that this will work through ASN Canada and be applied here in the near future.

List 25 on the link below is for helmets.

It's that "(expiry 31.12.2018)" that I was talking about, I thought we had 2 years left with Snell 2005 M helmets.

If I recall correctly we operate under ASN Canada rules.  I'm hoping they continue to allow Snell 2005 M until the above 2018 date because the Calgary club has a bunch of loaner helmets that are 2005 M.

We are under the ASN rules, but they generally follow the FIA.  (their full name is ASN Canada FIA afterall)

Well, at least you were right about GW Cycle World!  I've bought all my bike gear from them and find them to be an excellent shop to deal with for buying parts and equipment.

I would have expected 2005 M helmets to expire at the end of this year but the wording in the ASN regulations have me hopeful they will be allowed until 2018.  I guess this is one of those things where I'll just have to check in the spring.

Haha! And I was also concerned about what rules different clubs for track days would follow too.

Is it a major faux pas for a newbie to buy a stig helmet? Looks badass but I don't want to set any expectations!
