Technical Talk / Re: EVs in 2022« on: March 10, 2023, 11:26:13 AM »
For anyone else wondering, I managed to dig up some more info and figured I may as well post it here. I recently spoke to the president and VP of the WCMA as well as another source familiar with the situation.
The concern is indeed battery fires, and I'm told the insurance company won't cover damage to the venue due to a battery fire. For those unaware, the various breeds of lithium batteries found in electric and hybrid vehicles tend to burn hotter and are harder to put out compared to say a gasoline fire. This same insurance company apparently insures all motorsport across Canada. GDS Canada is working on a set of requirements for EVs (including procedures for dealing with a fire) but all discussions are happening behind closed doors. I'm told that it will likely be some time before these requirements are published, and then it will be up to each province to decide whether they want to adhere to these regulations or just bar EVs from competition. So unfortunately for me, I gambled and lost when I decided to convert my bike-engined car to electric. Dang. One other point for anyone else who is sidelined with their EV, I guess BC is still allowing them to compete despite the lack of insurance for damage to the venue from a fire. You could drive out to Kelowna to catch come autocross there... at least for now. 3

Technical Talk / EVs in 2022« on: April 02, 2022, 03:56:20 PM »
Hey all,
In the email we got last week from John (via MSreg), there was a line that reads: "The last thing of note is that at this time WCMA (and our insurers) will not be allowing electric vehicles to participate in 2022 - we apologize to those folks who this impacts (there was definitely some fast times put down last year!) but we are bound by the terms of our insurance." Now I tried googling around but couldn't find any other references to this. Wondering if there are any other details available (and if there's a story behind it). I am seriously considering running an EV in 2023, fingers crossed they are allowed back by then! 5
Member Introductions / Re: New member with some questions« on: October 08, 2020, 10:49:44 PM »
Well first to answer the questions in your other thread, you can use the dirtbike helmet as long as it has a Snell M2010 rating or better (Helmets with only DOT are not allowed). No you do not need to wear goggles. Registration for the Airdrie event is members-only until Friday, then opens up. When you get to the venue in the morning make sure to identify yourself as a first-timer so someone can show you what to do.
As for your questions about classing, I assume you are referencing this? https://www.scca.com/downloads/49336-2020-solo-rules-complete-reduced-2020-03-16/download No comment about the treadwear, but you can check page 88 for the allowable tire sizes and wheel widths for STU (which also allows engine tuning). Sounds like that's probably where you should be classed. Just don't worry about it too much for this event. Once you get hooked you can go through everything in detail and be ready for next season. 6

This looks really cool, I love spec stuff. No room for another car myself, but I just checked kijiji and they do seem very affordable. Very cool!

Yikes. 95.7, and from the other side of the car, too!
Thanks for posting. I've ordered a Car Chemistry muffler insert, which seems to have decent enough reviews. Fingers crossed. 10

Would it be possible to see the sound log from the morning? Blew a 95 on run 3, but I'm curious what it was in the first two...

Member Discussion (Private) / Re: Autocross Use – Vehicle Insurance« on: February 13, 2018, 12:20:03 PM »
What a pissoff. I have a hard time understanding how what I do with my property off public roads has any bearing on my insurance, especially since I don't carry collision on that vehicle. It's not modified, and participating in this sport makes me a better driver. Guess it's time to start shopping...
