Technical Talk / Re: Cutting a few dB off your exhaust
« on: April 26, 2019, 02:35:31 PM »
It might be a case of seeing how loud it is when you get there.  If it is too loud, you can pull the connector for the VVTL lift solenoid, this will keep the engine on the 'small cam' with a rev limit of 7000 and you can at least run for the rest of the day (I had to do this several years ago, and yes it counts as a mechanical change and isn't harmful to the engine).

If it is over, IMO the best solution would be going back to the OEM exhaust.  But I can recommend some mufflers that could be welded into what you have, depending on your available space.

If you have trouble with meeting sound, I can recommend some muffler replacements that have worked well on the MR2 with the same 2ZZ engine (albeit cammed and with some other goodies, but the recommendations should still be good ones).  I cannot comment on what the stock sound level will be for your car, but it is rare that a stock car is over our limit.  I just had issues as the original exhaust for the 1ZZ obviously would not work, and the tubular header and exhaust package I put in with the 2ZZ had a poorly selected muffler.

With Tara and I expecting our first child this summer, I cannot commit to really any level of attendance, especially later in the season.  That being said, I would be happy to meet with a new sound person go to over the details etc.

I've been looking into a custom single axle trailer for the MR2 - main concern is keeping the tongue weight down so the car still drives properly - especially a concern in something that is already rear heavy.  Most small 1" x 1" hitch receivers have a very low tongue weight maximum so I would not suggest using them as a 'tire tail' to support the full weight of the tires, wheels etc. etc.

Tara and I can help out as needed, same as last year.  Let us know.

Tara manages an Alberta wide corporate marketing team, I would suggest tapping her to help look at whatever proposal you are developing, at the very least.

Did some driving around the SE end of town on my lunch, any large lot that is paved, either has semi trailers in it because it is a logistics company or loading dock, or has too many curbs and lamp posts/plug in posts to be useful.  Based on a bunch of looking using google maps satellite view, we are going to be hard pressed to find something that will work within city limits.

I think the Spruce Meadows suggestion is a good one, but this will depend on their willingness of course, and they are quite busy through several weekends every summer.

Technical Talk / Re: SASC RHD classing clarification

We do the same already with Tara's ST205 Celica.  As a JDM RHD vehicle, it should technically be in F prepared.  We have done 'some' work to it, so I don't feel comfortable with it in F street, so we put it in Street Mod instead.

Not like any of our cars are class competitive anyways.

You could also remove the foam, and use a good amount of weight over a few days to compress it, then reinstall into the seat.  Not technically a violation of the rules.

Personally I think it is ridiculous that mods to accommodate larger drivers are illegal in street class.

My shoei open face is pretty good, you are welcome to try it next time I am racing (probably May 6 as I will have at least the MR2 out by then).

General Discussion / Re: 17x7.5, would you rather a 225/45, or 245/40?
« on: April 17, 2018, 12:18:55 PM »
I wouldn't go wider than 235 on a 7.5 inch wide rim.  Refer to the 'measured rim width' published in the tire specs, you want to be as close to this as possible, and no more than half an inch over.  As you start stuffing too wide tires on, you lose sidewall stability for the increase in contact patch area.  And for smaller cars (as opposed to Gwynn's truck), an increase in contact patch area does not always equal an equal increase in traction, as you lose surface pressure and tire heating as a result.

Sometimes you don't have a lot of options size-wise (I would prefer a 215 on the back of my MR2 with the 7" wide wheels, but there isn't an appropriate aspect ratio, so I need to go to a 225), but if there is a close to stock revs/mile tire in 235 width, that is what I would go for.

Compacted snow and ice crust like that would need a wheel loader to clear, not just a truck with plow.  I think we will just need to be patient and hope the weather warms up quickly.  8)
