How to connect to live timing at events
« on: June 25, 2018, 05:16:50 PM »
Did you know that we broadcast the standings live during events?

If you have an iPhone, have you noticed that live timing hasn't been working this year? :(

As far as we can tell, Apple made a change to its networking stack which broke iPhones' ability to connect to our live timing, but Ryan figured out yesterday how to get it working again.

To connect:

  • If you don't already have it, download the Google Chrome web browser. (Note that, if you have an Android phone, Chrome is already your default browser.) Live timing may work in other browsers too, but it doesn't work in Apple's default Safari browser.

  • Connect to the "scores" wi-fi network.

  • Open Chrome and open an Incognito tab by clicking on the three dots in the top right corner of the screen.

  • Go to scores.com.

  • Find someone who's behind you in the standings and mock them relentlessly. :)
Enjoy (again)!

What is the purpose of the incognito tab? I have accessed the scoring before without incognito, just wondering if Im missing something here?

If it works without Incognito for you, then just keep doing what you're doing.

Historically everyone was able to connect to scores.com with any browser, but something changed, and this year iPhone users have been unable to do so reliably. After some experimentation, we found out the iPhones that couldn't connect to live timing any other way still could when using Incognito mode. We're not sure why, but we think it's related to caching.

I was able to connect to scores.com using a regular Chrome tab once yesterday; after that it didn't work again until I switched to Incognito, then it worked for the rest of the day.

I’m on iPhone and Chrome hasn’t worked at all for scores since mid last year but oddly I tried Safari on Sunday and it was working.  :o

One of the hints that the issue is related to caching is that you can often access live timing the first time you try in a given browser, but not again. The first time I tried to access it using Safari this year it worked, but then it stopped. The first time I tried to access it using Chrome this year it worked, then it stopped. Chrome in Incognito Mode has been the only way I've been able to reliably, repeatably access timing, but your mileage may vary -- use whatever works for you. :p

We found the exact same thing. If you accidentally have been to the “real” score.com then your cache won’t allow it to load the score.com at the event. That’s why incognito works because it does not use cache to load the sites, at least that is how I understand it.

The other option is to use a link name that does not exist on the web and it will never happen. Good luck with that though.

It will if you completely clear your browsing history, which some people don't like the idea.  The incognito tab works well, I knew I would find some use for that...

Quick update -- Chrome caches some information even in Incognito Mode. For that reason, if you ever try to connect to scores.com in Incognito Mode and it doesn't work, it won't work again until you close the tab (or close Chrome itself), open a new tab, and try again.

I imagine Safari will clear its cached information at some point, at which it would work as you experienced.

Likewise, I'd expect Safari to work if you manually clear the cached information, but I haven't verified this yet.

Just a note, Yvonne and I seem to have no problems connecting on our iPhones with safari if we turn off cell data.
