SASC Winter Driving Schools - Ghost Reservoir Venue Lost
« on: December 05, 2017, 08:39:53 AM »
The SASC is unable to secure use of the Ghost Reservoir for the 2018 Winter Schools. TranslAlta holds title to the reservoir (including the submerged lands) and they feel that the risks associated with our ice driving activities are too high and therefore are not allowing us to continue our schools on their lands.

If folks have other suggestions for potential locations to host these schools please let us know.

Chain Lakes on HWY 22 has 6" ice and there is no public lands disposition over the boat ramp meaning its crown land open to the public?

What about Lac des Arcs? I used to see motorcycles on there all the time.

I thought that Ghost Lake was part of a provincial park, so wouldn't use of a park be up to the province to decide and enforce? I also thought that a property owner can't prevent anyone from using waterways unless it is a private lake (that is, a lake where they own the entire shoreline, which in this case they don't). So does trans-alta really have the rights to restrict how the lake gets used?

Third option... Have SASC accept all responsibilities for its own actions (in writing to TA) so that TA's fears of liability are unfounded.

I suspect even a letter wont work.
Media has a way of twisting the truths or omitting certain facts & that could easily be done in the event there was an incident at the lake.
At the end of the day, TA's name will still get dragged through the dirt & I think that's what their concern is

So that's what's bugging them? Imagine the headline: "Trans-Alta blocks driving school from teaching students winter driving safety skills".

Looks like a bunch of might happens and maybes. Do we really know if TA has the authority to keep SASC off the lake, and if so have they communicated exactly why they are opposed? Have they communicated this to other clubs and individuals that use the ice too? Some factual background to this problem would be nice.

With the CSCC ice dice happening next week and subsequently every second week until this March, does that mean Ghost Lake events are going on as usual?

CSCC is going ahead with ice dice yes, and SASC(to my knowledge) will not be having its usual ice driving schools.  There is definitely some politics involved here and unfortunately we caught the bad side of it.
