Course designs! Roger Johnson's 2014 updated booklet for
« on: April 15, 2015, 02:07:19 PM »
Roger has apparently updated his booklet - free pdf download here:

http://www.houscca.com/solo/courses/Course_Design_4-1-2.pdf

Anyone up for doing some course designs this year?  Ryan did a great job at the end of the year last year coming up with something interesting.

I know for myself it is easy to fall into a trap of designing similar (style is what it is I guess?) courses and particularly with the limitations we have due to the narrowness of the airport.

Sometimes it is good to have fresh ideas on course design.  I am also happy to help out to ease the "pain" and can provide base mapping for your use, of course!   ;)

I would like to learn how to design courses, but I admit that all my other commitments make this difficult (timing, registration, scoring, and even some driving).

Next year all being well I love to help with course design. I was doing the course design work at the RDSCC in 2014, but this I wanted a year off to compete.  :D

If you guys have some site dimensions, I can make a scale AutoCAD layout of the venue. You can pretty much drag and drop elements that are perfectly to size into it.

I'd like to try my hand at a course design if you wouldn't mind sending me a base map Reijo.

Maybe a wide-car-friendly type of course  ;)

Almost forgot about this thread!    Glad to hear of the interest in course design!

I have to-scale autocad mapping already that I can make available to anyone ...  Maybe on a separate thread and sticky on here....

Anyway, if you come out early (I plan to be there about 7:30 am ... staying Friday night) and help with the course lay-out and such, I can fill you in on how, what, why etc. of this particular venue, what to look for (those runway lights for one thing, worker stations, pit, grid etc.) and deal with ... pitfalls to avoid, some "rule-of thumb" hints (how to avoid painful but legal elements for instance), etc. etc.  If you have read through or even skimmed through Roger's book you have an idea of what I am speaking about.  It is a good guide!

I'm willing to set up a training session or so for this if there are people interested.

Could maybe use the  Microsoft Store in Chinook Mall (we used them for a couple of winter driving schools last winter).  Great huge screen in the room at the back etc.

Reijo, I'm thinking this might be a good topic for a session at the WCMA AGM. We will have a room set up already and it could help to encourage more soloists to participate. I'm hoping to have some more structured learning sessions for the solo program at the AGM.

Sure!  I'd be game for that!   :)
