Am I right in assuming that a 2015 MX5 GS should run in STR, or is there a better class to run it in ?

What mods can be done for it to stay in a stock class.

It's class depends on what has been modified.  In stock form, it is in CS:

If it has been modified too much for CS, it can be run in STR and after that, DP.

Street classes allow a very few changes:
Front or rear sway bar (but just one)
Shock absorbers
Exhaust from cat back
+/- 1" change in wheel diameter (same width and offset as stock)
Any size tires that you can squeeze onto legal sized wheels
Tires must be 200 or higher tread wear rating

Basically, start at the beginning and read until you find a class that allows the mod you have in mind.  If the rules do not say that you are allowed to do something, then it is illegal.  Note that Street Touring classes are "by invite only".  If your car isn't mentioned in appendix A in a ST* class, then it isn't allowed.

Thanks Murray. Just bought my wife a 2015 MX5 GS it comes stock with the LSD & factory upgraded dampers. I what to run as stock as I can so I'm thinking CS, what would you recommend?

Somewhere you asked about R's in stock - that is an old reference from 2 or more years ago.  Use the current SCCA rules as per Murray's link ... and that means 200 Thread wear tires min. for street (used to be stock) classes.

Except for the 2015 tread wear exemption we've recently discussed - 140 TW tires are legal for street & street touring classes this year in CANADA. Don't show up to a US event with < 200 TW.

I basically gave you that list in the 2nd post of this thread.  For exact details, you will have to read the rules.  They discuss "free" things like guages and data acquisition devices and extra mirrors (you may not remove the OEM one though).

Tires have to be free and clear of fenders, liners etc though, I remember seeing a specific point about this somewhere in the rules.

Lexus IS300 - bulletproof 3L NA straight 6, very nice, spacious interior for the size and age of car, and can be had for well under 10K these days.
