Firehawk Indy 500?
« on: August 21, 2024, 10:40:50 PM »
Hey folks! So my Michelin Primacy HP (stock) tires are not giving me the grip I'd like on the GR86, to no surprise. I'd like a dramatic improvement, and considering buying a dedicated set of track tires; however, not looking to buy tires every season... wondering about the Firestone Indy 500 - I see they have a treadwear rating of 340, so curious if they might last a bit longer but still provide way better grip. Anyone have experience with these? Thanks in advance!

Not a great tire... if you want something that's somewhat quick but will still wear ok I'd be looking at something like a Hankook RS4 or a Conti ECS02. But honestly on a light car like an 86 you can probably get something even stickier (see below) and have reasonably long tire life. Just my $0.02.

The RT660 last quite a while on these cars as well, and are quite close in speed to the RE-71RS. I have a brand new set of P225/45R17 at my shop if you are interested.

I have Indy 500 on my stock wheels, I used them for summers for 2 years and have about 8 autox days on them, they still have lots of tread left. If you want a tire that lasts they are good. But for grip not so much. I used a set of rt660 the last two events and they are significantly better.

From my experience on the '07 Civic, Indy 500's are about 3.5 - 4 seconds slower per run compared to RE71RS's. They'll last many seasons if you're just doing autocross though. Decent tire to learn on, but definitely not competitive.

Wow thx everyone for the advice. Since I already have slow but long lasting tires, it sounds like I should really go for something like the RT660s, and hope they last 2 seasons of light autocross use (6x a year-ish). If any one has some ugly and cheap 7.5inch 17 wheels for the GR86 (want to keep everything same as stock) please let me know! You folks rock!
