Our schedule hasn't allowed us to make a RDSCC event this year, but we usually try for at least one.  Nice group of people, and lots of seat time.

Any idea why the Mercedes GLA was placed into SSR on Saturday... it looked like he had OEM tires on it

Probably because nobody knew where to class him.  Where should he go?

^^ I thought SSR was for cars with R-comps, if he is just on street tires wouldn't he go into SS?

True, but does that car belong in SS?

Oh yeah... I am not sure about that. Actually looking at the cars in SS, it is a bit harsh

Similar cars might be the Forester XT, Audi RS4, or WRX STi... so maybe B-Stock?

GLA?   That is a SUV ... not sure if it is even eligible to run?  I don't see a listing for it ... which means it is not classified.  What is the height vs. width?

I would guess FS or even HS ...

It is brand new for this year, it is more of a stubby wagon than an SUV.

Dimensions:

Track Width.......1,557 mm (61.3)
Wheelbase........2,699 mm (106.3 in)
Length.............4,417 mm (173.9 in)
Width..............1,804 mm (71.0 in)
Height.............1,494 mm (58.8 in)

It is 355hp, has 332ft-lbs of torque and an AWD system too

Based on this I think it meets the requirement:

Maybe a crossover?  weight?

Sounds similar to WRX wagon, Evo, and STi ...

is the CLA 45 classified? stick it in that class and it should work. basically taller wagon version of that.

Not yet... and I read that all AMG models get tossed into SS until they get classed elsewhere

SCCA rule book, on page 165...

Super Street (SS)
Mercedes-Benz
   - AMG (NOC) "Not Otherwise Classed"

So in this case, SS was the correct class

I have a concern with these classes, as it leaves the possibility of having vehicles with that would fall into Mod and Prep classes competing without meeting the class specific safety requirements.  If something goes wrong our insurance could be invalid as we are required to follow the rules as written.  Although it is unlikely, I would hate to lose a club because of something like that (and the liability that a club would be opened up to would ruin any of our clubs financially)
Yeah, that's not quite what I was describing, at least for the Open PAX group. It allows you to run different cars in different classes in a season or a single car if you want, but each must still be classed appropriately and meet the requirements of the class the car is entered in.

I think what you're highlighting is the possibility of partially or under-prepared cars going into a catch-all group and not meeting all the safety requirements for some of the mods on a car. Off the top of my head, rollover protection is the only thing I can think of, is there more?

It makes no sense, should never have been build, and I love it!

It's rare here, but if someone runs non-DOT (true race tires) they would require a driveshaft hoop, kill switch and some other minor stuff.  It also could open up a can of worms if a club turned a blind eye to things like nitrous, I know ASA would not tell them to run OPAX but I'm sure other clubs would consider it awesome...
