Packwood Championship Tour
« on: July 06, 2017, 09:23:44 AM »
Packwood is this coming weekend with a number of competitors from Alberta headed down (as we speak in some cases) since it is about 12 hrs. of driving time from Calgary ... or about 2.5 hrs. SE of Seattle.

Packwood, of course, is the closest National level SCCA solo event to us and if you stick with this sport for any length of time, it is well worth your while to plan on attending one of them (or even Nationals - why not?) to see what they are about, how they run things, the cars, the competition, etc.  You can and will certainly experience a lot, learn a lot and also meet a whole bunch of other like-minded folks who are a great bunch of competitors and friends.

So look for live results, scoring etc. on SCCA Solo.live in the coming days.

There is a test and tune on Friday afternoon .... usually on the Friday morning Evolution has their school (they are a competitor to SoloPro of course) so there is that opportunity too.  Racing is Saturday and Sunday.

The Pro Solo is the weekend after - again, the closest Pro to us at the National level.

Here's a bunch of information on the Packwood Tour including those registered, schedule, run order, links for live timing/scoring etc. etc.:

Hmmm....only 254 entries ... I think that is about the lowest I have seen.  I wonder if there are any last minute entries.  I couldn't make it happen myself this year ... just did not even have the opportunity to plan for it.

Usually there are about 275 or so and can be as high as 300 or more.

I am also surprised at the low attendance.

I am looking forward to the event this year.  One of my favourite venues, and for the first time ever, I will be running a competitive vehicle in my class.

Just scanning the entry list and there's several "regulars" missing.  I wonder if the accommodation shortage had an affect?  Apparently there's a big wedding in Packwood this weekend and hotel rooms are hard to come by.  I tried booking our usual spot back in April and it was already sold out.

Seems like some unusual spread among the classes as well - CM is big by their standards at 10 drivers, CSP is back from the dead with 10 as well.  Other classes like SS (4), FS (4), SM (2), and a bunch of others are well below what I would have expected.

I'm a little disappointed that I'll be running the same heat as BS - really wanted to watch the Ryan vs Dan Bullis battle.  Two contenders for the top spot in Lincoln in my opinion.

Should be a blast as usual - love the whole Packwood experience

I was kind of thinking the economy may have had something to do with it as well.  Things are still slow here ... and has slowed for me again as a matter of fact (I'm looking to get out of engineering anyway but that is another story.  Maybe this  is my opportunity?  hahaha).

People can always book places out of town in the towns to the west of Packwood so if you are travelling further, I'm not sure it is really an issue.

And, of course, people may simply have other things to do ...

I'll continue doing my best to provide Ryan optimally warmed tires in his quest for the best this year.

Tom G. and Chris S. were just broadcasting from Packwood ... apparently arrived safe and sound.   They have a new cell tower so all of a sudden there is cell reception there!  I never had any connection with my Telus cell there in the past.  See Tom's FB page for live video.

It's still early, but Mr. Hemming looking pretty smart right now with Dan Bullis and Ryan 1-2 in BS and 1-2 in PAX overall.

Murray is holding a trophy spot in CS!

Only two heats in so far, so more to come.  Chris and Tom are running as I write in SSP.

Coned away my first two and drove a way overly conservative 3rd, not a good day  :-[

Chris was having issues getting comfortable with the vehicle.

I ended up in 4th place, although I tried mightily to move up in the rankings.  I am pretty happy with my trophy, since I was fighting a pretty tough crowd.

I have trophies (baseball caps) for Ryan and Cam; Ill try to get them to you next time we bump into each other.
