I can't believe I hadn't clued in to think about this, but does anyone know who owns the old Park & Jet location? I haven't looked at it since they moved south of Airport Trail.

I had no idea they moved across Airport Trail, its worth looking at.  I could drive by and see if there is any For Lease/Sale signs.

If we found the right lot, is it possible to hold wintercross events? Rallycross but on a paved lot in winter, very technical driving with alternate grip/traction.  One event could be snow, next could be cold wet pavement. Would have to be quite the lot, but could it be done if we found such a lot?

If you scope out the lot please post back and let us know what you find!
As for wintercross (is that even a technical term? ;) ) that sounds like a sport that would be very hard on tires and may require some additional space, closer to what rallycross requires, but maybe?

Reijo - any chance you could please email me the pictures?

Also, after talking at the CSCC meeting last night it seems we may have a connection at the resort already.  We are working to investigate this right now and I will update this thread however things may progress.

"Stampede Grounds:
The Stampede grounds has 4 parking areas that could be suitable within the grounds."

The Stampede grounds are a non starter. I've talked to them. Didn't even get to pricing.
#1... They are very sesitive to noise issues with their Ramsey neighbours.
#2... All of their grounds/lots enforce a 30 kph speed limit.
A Soap Box Derby would work.

"Century Downs? Don't think it's been mentioned here yet.  I was at our new horse race track last September, and they were in the middle of grading a HUGE parking lot.  Not sure if it was destined for asphalt or going to stay gravel, but it was properly sized."

The lot(s) are on the south side of the casino. Useable size is ~80m x 50m crossing over to smaller 45m x 45m... similar in size to Deerfoot lots used a few years back. I called. No follow up from them. So if someone else can get in the door there, go for it.

The Deerfoot lot was approximately 75x200m with an island in the middle.  80x50m with a 45x45m extension is quite a lot smaller than Deerfoot or Westerner, but if it becomes the only option it may be large enough providing we can park cars elsewhere.

Sorry I was posting from my phone last night and wasn't able to address all of your suggestions.

The Cargill lot seems to be peppered with those little power posts for plugging cars in - sorry but I don't think that one can work.

The area at Enform without the plugins is too small to safely run a course in, sorry again

The lot SE of the stampede grounds (https://www.google.ca/maps/@51.0295578,-114.0441374,220m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en)  looks quite promising, if the area on the west end of it could be used for grid and both east lots could be used for a course I see a lot of potential there.  Anybody know anything more about this place?

Crossroads sounds very viable to me.  They are asking $15000/month for that section on the front, but are including some indoor space and power and such for that price.  Maybe they'd rent the back lot for $8000/month?

Are we talking about the same lot?  I've attached a picture of the one I am talking about.  It has fire hydrants and a chain link fence at the perimeter but the lot size is about 70% of westerner park I thought, measuring nearly 150m in length and about 70m wide for most of it's length.  I don't recall any k-rail and when I visited the lot was clear of debris.
The surrounding road and sections of pavement on the east ends of the grounds belong to the Calgary Police and are not available to rent as far as I know.

I agree spectator access is a concern (i.e. non-existent) but if it becomes the only place that is willing to have us I'd totally run there.

Right now the holdup with this facility is that we have been given a "no" by the person in charge of booking the venue, but his reasons sound like they may not be as set in stone as the word "no" implies.  We need to work on trying to enhance their understanding of just how low the risks are to their facility and also to help them understand the benefit we bring to the community and well, the city as a whole really.

Any avenues for doing this are worth pursuing.  My first thought was to try to gather some political support but if we have any contacts within the organization, particularly anybody who might be interested in cars or racing, they could prove VERY valuable.

A rental fee of $1100/day is very doable, that is not a big hurdle, heck, for a facility that would let us bring more cars out I think we could reach up to $2000/day or even a bit further.  The up-front cost is a HUGE concern and also I have this information only second-hand, obviously it would require much more thorough checking before we could ever commit to even trying to find the money.

As for the city-owned lot that was suggested to me, it has not been forgotten, I'm just way too early in the process to have any valuable information to share.  I will be raising the issue of venues at the CSCC meeting Thursday night and plan to talk about venues such as that one in a high-level way to see what the club is willing to entertain and what we can afford.

Thanks for the information!  I was worried that would be the answer.  Lot 53 is definitely not suitable for us.

The only way I can see it working is if with 10 years going by most of the townhouses have changed hands? :D

Interesting point!

Please refrain from contacting this facility for now.  I just got another email from Gary and it sounds like Corvettes Unlimited has already contacted them and is waiting for an answer in the next couple days.

Exactly, let's make this happen!

Everybody did dodge the question about whether the meeting could be held in person ;). Conference calls always take many times longer than meeting in person.

When the presentation was made to the executive team at the CSCC clubhouse it was stated that the WCMA was looking to take a leading role in booking new venues and managing existing venues.

The concerns raised by Penny and others were about the WCMA taking over ownership / direction of the clubs, which it has already been made perfectly clear is not going to happen and was not the plan.

Just a tangent note for this location:  Sobey's is moving in to this location - and closing their existing in Calgary.  To the best of my knowledge, their existing is at 7704 30 St SE, Calgary, but is not a suitable lot.  Credit to NickST for the idea to check their old location.

Thanks for the update - and that was a great idea to check their old location :D

This one is such a long shot I'm not even going to fill in the template until we've had a chance to discuss this a bit.  Does anybody know if there is even a snowball's chance in hell of renting this lot?  It looks plenty big and the north end doesn't have a lot of obstacles.  We could use the south end for parking / grid then the north end for a course.

The concerns I see are as follows:
  • Noise / Nearby housing:
    • There are some townhouses immediately on the west side of the parking lot
    • There are houses in a nearby neighbourhood to the northwest
  • Hostile Administration:  I have a gut feeling they are not at all interested in having us there

Inspecting the lot on a random Sunday (February 14, 2016) there were approximately 125 cars in the lot.  The sign says it is $7/day to park there so that's about $875 in parking revenue they would potentially lose if we were to rent the lot from them.  Those people would have to park at a more expensive lot so perhaps something could be arranged?  My suggestion would be that we pay $1000/day for the lot, and that they lower the rates in adjacent lots on days we rent so that the people who are used to paying $7/day can still do so.  This puts additional money in their hands as compared to just having people pay to park and hopefully does not anger the regular patrons of Lot 10.

I also think that it would help to have a sympathetic person with some power within the student body or administrative staff.  No idea who that would be (i graduated WAY back in 2010 so I don't know anybody any more) but I do know there is a Formula SAE team still at the university so they have at least a tiny bit of appreciation for motorsports!
