Technical Talk / James's EP Civic
« on: March 19, 2017, 07:16:56 PM »
Alright guys time for me to start over as a novice again! I need to class my car for this season. It's a 1997 Honda Civic Hatch with a K20A2 engine from a Acura RSX Type S. It has a 6 speed transmission out of an Accord Euro R with a shortened final drive and Wavetrac LSD. Full adjustable suspension/arm upgrades, mix match of ITR/S2000/EP3 brakes, 15x8 wheels with 205-225 R Compound tires.

I believe the car sits somewhere in a prep class?

Also any tips for someone who has never competitively driven a FWD car before?

For Ice Dice, the classes are AWD, RWD and FWD, each one has studded and non studded class. Studded rules allow 3.5mm of protrusion for the studs. I ran Westlake SW606 with 3.5mm studs this year on a 1998 WRX STi Wagon and it proved to be a winning combination.

I purchased two Hondas today, will likely skip prepping the FiST this season and race one of the Hondas (in a stupid class).

There isn't much to prep on a FiST... basically it just needs tires and it is competitive in HS

Against my Accord? NEVER LOL, or TSX, if I pull the trigger on one  :-\

This begs the question -- why 2 Hondas?

Buy one, get the other for $1 package deal. Works great because the $1 one will make an excellent ice racing/rally x car.

What did you actually end up getting? Care to reveal details of said cars? Cmon lol tell us

A K20 6 speed EK Civic and a DC2 Integra GSR. My plans were to use the Civic for lapping and time attack, the Integra for ice dice and rally x and the Fiesta for auto x and my daily driver. Just depends on budgeting and time constraints. I also am still working on breaking down and parting out the Subaru I crashed.

I don't mind helping out at the booth, I quite enjoy it.

Talked to my salesguy. My car is still 12 weeks out roughly, production has not started yet. I won't be ready for the season at all so this year is basically a write off, probably won't prep the car but will try and get as much seat time as I can.

Now I just need to get by without a car for 12 weeks which is the hardest part.

Well I'm definitely excited for my car arrive now that I've written off my Subaru accidentally lol.

That sucks.  Any better date for delivery of your new car?

I'm heading to Maclin Ford today to see if I can get some updates and timeline. It's been just over six weeks since I placed the order.

Are there any 2017's of that model on the street yet even?

I don't actually know if they already did the first 2017 batch production run last fall or not.

Glad you were able to find something that works for you.

I had a set of very worn RE71r's that were well past the wear bars, and I ran them. A few fun facts:

- Turn-in response with these tires is great.
- The worn RE71r's have more grip then a set of Hankook RS3's mounted on a similar car.
- They have ZERO grip in the rain! If you run them in the wet, you will probably die.  :-X

And yet you still drove to Fort McLeod on them in a rainstorm lol.

I just noticed that you were planning on only a few autocross events this year.  If so, then I think you could find something more suitable than the RE-71R.  They do wear out quickly, and they aren't exactly quiet (or soft) on the street.  You might prefer the RE760 or the Continental DW.

I really like the DW for a non competition tire.

I'm planning on going with RE-71R for auto x this year, but I likely will swap them at events and not street drive them. I may try some Zestino tires out for lapping at Castrol if I can get my hands on the size I need. And OEM Bridgestone Potenza whatever garbage comes with the car will have to do for street driving, as I'm not going to just discard some brand new tires.

What do you believe the clubs course of action will be if a person unrelated to the event chooses to operate a "drone" overhead while the course is active?

Has this been planned for at all? If it has not been discussed at this point I suppose it needs to be. It's pretty likely to happen at some point.

Shoot it down, Grand Tour style  :P

We ordered it one week ago, and were told that it would likely be April (or even end of April).  I guess they found one somewhere in Canada that they could snaffle.  It is exactly what we ordered.  And I checked, it does have the newer transmission, so I won't need to worry about that.

Dang you got lucky. I was told 12-16 weeks for my new car but online it looks like it could be as long as 5 months...
